exhaust work ?

No, it is not another what muffler should I use to get me 30 xtra hp? Probably another alternately dumb question. I have at least 1 broken exhaust stud on my 86 911. I am dropping the engine/tranny to send the tranny for a rebuild.

Should I try to get the heat exchangers off with the engine bolted in, or after it is mounted to an engine stand?

I will adjust the valves, and fix the usuall oil leak stuff while the engine is out, but is there anything else to do while the engine is out? PS I put a new sound pad in 2 years ago when the engine was out for a new clutch.

thanks
AG

Do it on the stand. Use oxy-acetelyne to heat the nut/barrel nut and quickly get in there with the socket. Have an assistant to hold the torch in between. The trick is to get the nut cherry red but keep the stud in the middle a darker colour. If you are too slow getting the spanner or socket in there the heat will transfer from the nut to the stud and you run the risk of snapping the stud. Move onto another one and come back to it. I snapped a few myself the other day. When I got it on the stand the rest came out real easy.
Now I've got to sort this out:
