H4's suck??

What is up with h4 head lights?? The high beams work great but the low beams seam like I have oil lanterns for head lights. I have a relay kit installed Am I missing something?? I think I have 50W and 55W low high bulbs. Any input?????

Get higher wattage bulbs from our host.

Craig 930 RS 05-13-2005 08:41 AM

Still, that is odd. Foggy inside with the famous H4 residue?
I think something else here is at play - possibly an electrical problem

masraum 05-13-2005 08:41 AM

Are your headlights adjusted correctly?

What voltage do you get at the bulb with the car running?

RoninLB 05-13-2005 08:48 AM

road chips degrade optics. DOT lens sucks. and definately tarnished reflectors and adjustment.

I guess these are Bosch H-4's ?

You must have something wrong with your lights or electrical system. In proper working condition, H4s, even with stock lights, work very well. Certainly would not be confused with oil lamps!

yeah, what Brian said.

I recently installed H4's with the stock bulbs and I'm amazed the candlepower. I keep thinking I'm aiming too high, but it's just a lot of light.

hummm.. that make sense.

maybe a voltmeter test with lights on at the headlight bulb socket and compare to battery voltage for a quick test.

I agree. Something not right with your low beams.

Carl83911 05-13-2005 09:02 AM

Same here, just recently installed H4's and they're much brighter than the stock. The beam pattern should look like this _____/ .

stefang 05-13-2005 09:03 AM

Did you install relays and headlights at the same time? perhaps something is wrong with the low beam relay.

Maybe you hooked up your 'City Lights"?

mb911 05-13-2005 09:32 AM

No city lights.. They are brand new bosch h4-s eruo Installed the relay kit at the same time. Maybe not getting good contact through the factory relays?? The sucros kit worked well. The low beams just suck the high works great.

Amen!

john walker's workshop 05-13-2005 09:48 AM

if the wires are mixed up in the plugs, and they ground through the wrong terminal, the lighting suffers. maybe the reflectors have deteriorated.

mb911 05-13-2005 09:52 AM

John,

They are brand new lights but may be that they are grounded wrong so can anyone give a pic of the correct plug wiring???so I can verify

mb911 05-13-2005 10:26 AM

think I found the problem found a pic that arego had from a while ago.. Wow this will be nice when correct

Quicksilver 05-13-2005 11:25 AM

One detail. A stock DOT H4 bulb is 55W low beam and 60W high beam. You mentioned 50/55 but that may be a typo...

Bill Verburg 05-13-2005 01:53 PM

It also depends onwhat you are comparing them w/ My 55/100 H4s used to seem awsome, but now pale after using modern HIDs

lateapex911 05-13-2005 02:32 PM

and on that note...is there a kit that can correctly install HIDs into an early car? Not a bulb, the entire reflector bulb, transformers and lenses? If so, what, where, how much and how successful is it?
