915 question

I know that the synchros are shot on 1st/2nd - I get the usual grinding unless I'm gentle. But I also have alot of resistance coming down from 4th into 3rd - no grinding, just doesn't want to go in there.

What are the causes? Synchros as well?

I was going to repair 1st/2nd myself but if I have to go deeper I may get it repaired professionally.

Does reverse not want to drop in as well? If so a clutch cable adjustment could help solve the problem. I've heard that 3 turns clockwise on the adjustment nut does miracles on the 80's Carreras. Easy enough to try before a pro re-build. I'm about to do the same only my symptom is reverse and 2nd not wanting to drop in.

Hi Gordon,

Reverse seems ok most of the time - sometimes i have to roll forward to persuade it, if that makes sense.

Probably worth trying the adjustment.

It's really not any "deeper" to change 3rd/4th. If you have the tranny apart enough for 1st/2nd, you're already there.

IIRC, you can do this job with the tranny and engine still connected, but there is really no reason to NOT split them. It's only 4 bolts, and if you're not messing with the clutch, there are really no problems with putting them back together.

Take a look at this thread from when I did mine. It's kinda long, but you'll see what I mean. It may answer some questions you didn't even know you had.

Never heard about anyone doing the box whilst still on engine.

Since you have to remove the eng/box, rather separate the two and check clutch, etc too.

Could be dog teeth problem. You can buy dog teeth alone from our chummies at Pelican! (not a Porsche part) If some of the sychs are slightly worn you can turn them for another life (subject to them of course not having been turned already). That way you may get extra life out of the synchs.

Lastly have a good look at the shifting sleeve btw 3-4. If the teeth are worn it must be changed - or you'll forever curse the 915.

Rich, give the cable adjustment a try, it will take only a few minutes and the results may surprise you. That won't help the 1st/2nd grind situation but at least you might get 3/4th back until you get to do the sync's.
I too will embark on that journey this winter.
