What alloy?

All,

Does anyone know the aluminum alloy used by Fuchs? I need to give a potential anodizing source some details to determine their suitability...

TIA,

Chris

Steveinatlanta 05-17-2006 10:37 AM

They are Magnesium, not aluminum. If your potential annodizing source didn't know they were Magnesium, consider Al Reed refinishing. I tried several places in Atlanta that turned the work down at any price.

do a search using "Al Reed". He is far cheaper than any of the local shops I talked to and does excellent, consistant work.

Sorry -

didn't notice you are a senior member.

I'm sure the reference to aluminum was a mistake. And you are aware of Al Reed and how the search button works.

I'll stop typing now...

Fuchs are magnesium? Don't think so.

OOPS, guess that answers my question... I swear it didn't come up in my search...

Steveinatlanta,

Don't sweat it. Sometimes we all miss things.

So?..... this ( the Fuchs) is still an aluminum alloy wheel...what does a fraction of 1% Mg have to do with calling this a magnesium wheel?...

Now the 5.5 x 15.... " gas burner" wheel....that's another story....

Not true. Years ago, Pelicanite Nick Moss contacted Fuchs directly for an answer to this question.

Q: Can you tell me what aluminium alloy was used in the Fuchs Porsche rims of the 60s and 70s?

A: We used 6082(USA), 3.2315(DIN), AlMgSi1(Type) or FUCHS Designation AS10.62,
.62 indicates Temper Disignation.
Best regards Joachim Boehme

very good anticorrosion properties

There is an indepth thread on the subject here

Excellence article on Fuchs, (issue#93 pg 107) says the alloy used to make Fuchs is "AlMgSil or AA6082."

AA6082 is; Al 0.9Mg 1.0Si 0.7Mn

--OR--
0.9% Mg (Magnesium)
1.0% Si (Silicon)
0.7% Mn (Maganese)
97.4% Al (Aluminum) [implied balance]

Slightly different from Jacks of Nicks of Joachims factory info.

Wow,

And here I thought I was the only one who went to matweb.com for entertainment.

You guys had better stop all this talk before I get too excited. What comes next is a downward spiral about the drawbacks of adding sulfur to improve machinability...

Chris

And the lug nuts while we're at it?

911pcars,

You don't sound very excited... Are you patronizing us?

?"You don't sound very excited... Are you patronizing us?"

Chris,
Not altogether. Half mocking ourselves, half-serious in that this data is both informational and related and should be in one thread.

My next question is about its half-life in anticipation of the next poster.

Sherwood

Half-life!

Now you're speaking my language.

It's just the natural log of 2, divided by the effective attention decay constant!

No, stick around.

You've only got 65 posts. Of my nearly 3,000 I must have at least 100 (or more :() where I ended up puting my shoe in my mouth! SmileWavy

We all learned something.

+1

Now imagine my embarassment with less than 200 posts - I'm hoping to get the dumbest stuff out of the way early.

Chris

P.S. - There are quite a LARGE number of very well educated and diverse contributors on this board. Post prudently, state your opinions as such, and ask questions. You and your ball should really consider staying...
