Separation of Engine and Tranny
I just disconnected the engine on my 1983 911 SC today (with transmission remaining in car). I was able to lower the engine a bit (6-12 in) but ran into great difficulty separating the engine and tranny. Their still together.
Are there any tricks I am overlooking. I can see a separation at the two of about 1/16-1/8 inches but it won't budge after that. I am assuming it is just an alignment issue and will work itself out after a good nights sleep or maybe I didn't lower the engine enough???? Am I missing anything else? 1. How low do you actually lower the engine before pulling it off the transmission mounting bolts. The one manual says about a foot. Pictures seem to indicate that the engine can be dropped until the top of the fan is nearly level with the top rim of the trunk. Thanks in advance Rick |

You forgot to disconnect the clutch cable.

It is much much easier to remove the engine and transmission as an assembly. Then seperate the two when you have them out on the floor.

you have to remove the clutch lever spring so the clutch arm can turn allowing the throw out bearing to move, Kevin

911 engine/trans separation.....
Rick,
I'll be happy to take a look at your car and see what you failed to disconnect. I'm just a few minutes to Valley Forge. Tony 610-272-7634 |

rick, get the motor up on blocks and remove all the clutch stuff. helper spring, and all the arms. it is only a circlip. then the motor and tranny will separate. easier to do this when the motor is still in, but i made the same move. it was not hard.

Thanks for all the great replies. I actually removed the circlip clutch arm and helper spring and return spring before lowering the engine. Do I have to rotate the shaft that the arm mounts to (shifting fork) after I remove all this or does it go on its own when everything is disconnected??? Does it matter the order that the 2 springs are removed??

Finally got it. The problem was that the engine and the transmission were not aligned and I was pulling against friction. Amazing what a good nights sleep and a little help from some Pelican friends can do.
By the way, I ended up remating the transmission and engine and removing them together. It was so much easier and will make the re-installation all the easier. Thanks for all of the great suggestions. Thanks for the help Tony! Rick |
