Porsche Crest How to fix door stay

My door stay no longer works so I ordered a new one. When I went to install it I noticed that the original had ripped completely from it's mount (ripped, bent sheet metal in there). Anyone know how I might fix this???

Thanks,
Bob

Sounds familiar. My wife has learned to not help me in the garage anymore...

It should be no big deal to fix. I think there is ripped sheet metal around my drivers door stay too. You should be able to straighten out the sheet metal and then get a welder to tack it back together. Put some POR15 and touch up paint over top and take your wife out for dinner.

Bob,

Check out the door stay reinforcement kit offered by our host, it works very well.

I have two thoughts. One, you should be lucky she is/was willing to help. Two, you, as the jacker, should make sure it is safe to jack before doing so. I have learned not to take anything for granted.

Just a note... There was a reference in the original post about this being my wife's fault and to avoid a big debate on who is to blame I edited it out.

Are door stay issues pretty common? Are they usually easy to fix?

Thanks,
Bob

Bob, good decision, wives are even more expensive to replace than doors!

Yes, the door stay issue is common. Have it myself on drivers side. Not got around to fix it yet.

As mentioned the host (I believe) has a kit.

Also, if you don´t have it already, get Wayne´s book 101 Projects for you Porsche - there is one chapter on this project.

Yes, very common problem. I have the kit on my project list. But always demote it for more pressing issues....

BTDT. Assuming the metal isn't torn away and it's largely still there it'll work. With the new doorstop it made my door difficult to close, like the last 1/16th just before latching it wanted to bounce back. Over time, it eased but it's still a bit sticky.

About a 20 minute job..

When you install the new one, just remember to run a piece of copper wire or hanger through all the pieces so they don't slip down between the inner and outer door skin - it's a real bastard (but possible) to get out if you do this, trust me, I know

I have already advertised your book, four posts earlier, Wayne..

BTW, I thoroughly enjoy 101 Projects. Great content and very well written. Even a durn for'ner understands it. As I understand there is a new edition. Right ? Only updates or many new topics ? If the latter, my order will be on its way real soon.

Maybe, but they made 1988 Carreras for one year and they make new wives everyday.

Though I didn't read the original, unedited post - in the interest of maintaining domestic bliss know that this is a common problem and it develops over time.

The metal fatigues and steadily, slowly, begins to tear away with each open/close cycle.

Even if your wife was present for the final rip the damage was done long before. Perhaps even starting before you purchased the car.

I did the door stay repair kits on both doors of my 84 Targa. The passenger door (wife's) went on easily. The drivers door I found had torn and bent sheet metal. I could not get the repair plate in place. So I took a ball peen hammer and punch to get the metal close to where it should be. Then I took a bolt and stack of washers through the mounting hole and tightened it down to bring the metal back into place. After I took the bolts out the repair plate fit well and I have had no problems for the past year.

Not a new edition, but a new cover, with some updates and corrections inside...

Sad statement. I beg my wife to drive my car and take an
interest. That way she'll "understand". Afterall, it is
only a car....
