Still haven't owned a VW but am much more likely to own a RWD one after owning a few 911s! Most likely next is a Vanagon or a cheap bug if times get tough!

Add another. Bought new 68 bug as a young buck for 2k, ran it for 150k+ and sold it for 0.3k. What a deal. There were quite a few firsts in that car. :-)

First car was a '66 bug, but I wanted a Porsche long before that. I actually got the bug by default as it was handed down from my father.

My desire for a Porsche has been there for while. I first car was a 1980 VW Rabbit diesel followed by a 1970 Karmann Ghia and a 1969 Bug. I think my confidence in being able to work on the Porsche started with my work on my first 3 VWs.
My car preference has grown to be almost exclusively German...I currently own an Audi, Mercedes and now Porsche. I wouldn't mind a BMW 2002 so I guess that leaves the Messerschmitt and Borgward, eh?

Re: How many 911 owners here owned a VW Beetle first?
Certainly not! And furthermore I wouldn't admit to publicly if I had. No shame? :-) |

In 1977 I got my first car, it was a 76 Ford Pinto that I shared with my sister. As soon as I could pull the funds together, I bought a 69 VW Baja Bug for $1000. Air cooled was great... scraping the frost off the inside of the windows while driving in the winter was memorable.

Probably one of the first "cars" I ever drove was a dune buggy based on a 60s Beetle. My dad and uncle built it back when they were my age. I'm too young to have owned an Beetle back in the day though.
A couple years ago me and my cousin rebuilt the buggy after it sat for 10 years. I rebuilt the Type I in my dad's garage. Here it is after I was in progress and when it was done. (914 engine in the background too LOL) ![]() ![]() The ghetto garage test http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_vIhsVRYSM&feature=g-crec-u

My first car was a 66 Bug which I totaled after a few months. Next was the 65 sunroof Beetle pictured here:
![]() ...and still have one, a 66 Bug I picked up a few years ago from my Uncle. Tucked in for the winter mode:

My first car was a 67 bug. I rolled it turning into a Denny's parking lot too fast at 2:00am in the morning. It landed on the wheels and started right up. We took it to my friend's dad's shop (Bryce's VW Repair), cut the top off, front and rear ends, bolted on fiberglass rear Baja bumpers, and and a one-piece Baja front end and shazam!...The next day I drove to school in a Baja bug!

My first car was a '66 Chevy II Nova, official one owner, old lady, garage find for $600, running and driving with no rust and factory paint. I sold it off to get a '64 Bug!
I fkd that up, now Chevy II's are worth a mint.I went from a '64 Bug sedan to a '63 sedan, '67 vert, '66 sedan, '67 sedan, '99 Mexican, '98 Mexican, '65 Bus, '68 Ghia, '71 Ghia, '55 Oval 3 fold sunroof, '64 sunroof, '64 sedan, another '67 sedan and another 63' sedan. There have been many in between for parts and profit as well. I currently have seven Beetles in the stable. I prefer the ACVW's to Porsche for their ability to out handle and out run most normal vehicles, with little effort after a proper build. ![]() This is my unrestored '69 Sleeper. Weighing just 1740lbs. complete with guesstimated 190-215hp at the flywheel. Friday is dyno day! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pardon the "high boy" stance, this will drop it down a few inches when installed. ![]()

ughhh
I hate bugs, I hate almost all air cooled VW's... but then again I spent 5 years of my life in HS and College working on them. Its amazing when you know soooo much about a car you will refuse to ever own. When I worked at a more famous VW place in Mesa called Karls Kustom VW's I used to get shizz from a frequent customer about me not having ever owned a VW, I told him I owned a 914 with a type IV and he said that didn't count, I think it pissed him off that his 65 with a monster 2132 couldn't keep up with the Saab I DD'd at the time haha

VW Beetles and 911s go hand in hand! I had a 72 standard and super. Also had a 60 sunroof and 67. Always dreamt of 911s since I was 10. Beetles were the arthritic grandfather of the 911. My 76 Targa feels so similar. You can't miss the lineage. It's resparked my love for my long forgotten Dubs.
