I bought this car about six months ago from a fellow worker for 500.00.When he drove it to my home for delivery he said it was feelin real good at 80.Since delivery she hasn't moved, I plan to restore her completely this will take some time and a bunch of cash . This is my first Porsche and I'm very excited about it Ive always wanted one.

$500?! That gives you a license to dump loads of cash towards restoration. Looks to be very orginal. One of the first things that go missing on the 68s are the side markers. Some of the big ticket items on that car are the 3 bar decklid grill and hood badge. Some of the hard to find items that you don't want to order repros of are the bumper/rocker trim, horn grills and turn signals. Hopefully the door panels and rear view mirror are in great shape. Are those deep 6s?
All in all a great base for restoration - great score! |

A hell of a lot more than $500, but it all depends on the rust situation. More pics please.
Check all these areas for rust and let us know...Front pan Front fender wells Rockers Jack pad area A and B pillars Windshield area by door hinges Floor pan area Rear seat pans Rear shelf corner by rear window Lower rear window corners Torsion bar tube (rear) Where did she spend her time? Dry climate or northern with the dreaded winter salt? Any accident damage history? Looks like a great find. Frankly, no matter what condition she is in, 500 bucks is a friggin' steal. You could sell one wheel and get your $500 back. That has to be the steal of the year.

The Red Book doesn't break down the Sporto numbers, maybe another book I have at home does, I'll check tonight.

My first Porsche was a 1968 911L that I bought in 1988 for around $2,000.
It looks like you got a great deal Jeff. Hopefully you wont find much rust to deal with. I had 2 friends that had Orange 1968 911L's and I think both of the cars are in Europe now.

And to think you were concerned about whether or not you got taken Jeff! Great score! That'll be a lot of fun. Congratulations.
Umm, if you decide you don't want it, send it on over here and double, no triple, no quadruple your money instantly!

Jeff,
Scott is right on with his questions. Before offering suggestions, there are three critical questions: 1) What is the current situation? Most important is rust but all other is important. 2) What do you want to do? What use? What 911 do you want to end up with? Basically you were given a 911. No one in his right mind says no. You need to ask yourself if this is what you want. With this car you will be encouraged to keep it original (or at least returnable to original). You need to evaluate this. 3) What is your budget? Don’t post that but contact other owners. It is very easy to spend far more than the current market value on one of these 911s. If done right, you can have a lifetime of enjoyment and cost be damned. Another alternative is to sell the ’68 911 to an enthusiast and buy the model you want. You will get more than $500. If you want to restore the ’68, you will find a lot of help. As Henry said “As you can see, this is not for the faint of heart....“ I’ll be glad to help. Make sure your pockets are sufficiently deep. Best, Grady

Jeff, GOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!
I have only two pieces of advice: No. 1 - Listen to Grady and No. 2 - Listen to Grady. Its gonna cost and cost big to get it "right". If you really want a flared hotrod or some such, absolutely great...but don't do it to that piece of history that you got essentially for free. I'd give my left *** for that car. There is a lifetime of enjoyment in that car for the right guy. Huge congratulations.

1968 Standard coupes were also produced in those numbers. What I've found are (and correct me if I'm wrong--that's one of the reasons for the post):
Standard Coupes - 473 (chassis numbers 11830001-11830473) L Coupes - 5449 (chassis numbers 118050001 - 118055449) L Targas - 5134 (chassis numbers 118550001 - 118555134)

The 911 L was only produced in 1968. The L stood for "Late" (as in late model). The 911 L had the same 130 horsepower as the regular 911. It was also the most expensive of the 911s, since the 911S was not available in the US in 1968.
There were only 449 cars builts with this designation and they all have production dates well after October 1967. This is contributed to engineering & mechanical failures (specifically, the front suspension and transmission). The engineers in Stuttgart, Germany, re-engineered the problem areas and built the remaining 449 cars and subsequently released them for sale. found here: http://vista.pca.org/stl/911l.htm
