what fluid for limited slip transaxle?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I changed the fluid in my tranny and I'm not sure I used the right stuff. I was in a hurry because I was having trouble getting into gears (turns out it's bad bushings in the shifter --- replacement parts on the way).

I put in Valvoline Synthetic 75W90 Gear Oil (GL-5 rated).

Should I dump it and replace it with Redline? If so, which one?

I do have a limited slip. I've got the original window sticker for my car, and it was an option.

Given the LS, I think I should not use the Redline 75W90NS. Correct? Do I use the plain Redline 75W90 Gear Oil? Is it GL-5 rated? Got what I need for my synchros?

Thanks for advice to the newbie.

Shannon

I replaced my trans fluid about a year or two ago with Redline. There is much said about it in several other threads.

Mobil One SHC is a good choice for the G50 with LSD. See here:

Too bad

My favorite stuff for my 993 is also NLA (MTL-R from Specialty Formulations).

Seems like lots of people have used the 75W90NS but that is for non LS diffs. Since most SE and 3.2s are NOT limited slip, I'm guessing that's why they use it.

I think what I need is Redline 75W90 Gear Oil. Can anyone verify that?

Here's what the Paragon website says about it:
75W90 Gear Oil - recommended for most street driven and racing differentials. Excellent performance in conventional and limited-slip units. Also for limited-slip manual transaxles which require a 90 WT oil. Contains limited-slip friction modifiers.

Lsd...

Shannon,

It sounds like you're "suppose" to have a LSD rear end. My car was suppose to have one, but doesn't... Someone swap it out for one reason or another. I would double check to be sure by jacking up the rear end to see what the wheels do.

The LSD rear end, both wheels will turn in the same direction, the Non LSD rear end, one wheel when rotated will turn in the opposite direction. You could have a LSD rear end and the clutch packs are shot. In this case the opposite wheel won't rotate.

I only bring this up as it might influence which product you use.

I'd use the M1 Delvac 75w90 (which superseded the SHC product). I'm currently running it in my C4 in both differentials and love it. I tried Redline and found it too notchy in the G50, but I've used it in other cars and have been very happy with its performance.

Lufteknic is the only place you can get the Delvac product in gal jugs. I get it from the big rig shop next door, as they have it in 55 gallon drums and they pump it right in to my 911 - cost me a whopping $23 last time they changed the fluid for me.

I'm sure I'll pay way more than the $23 you paid... but it will be worth it. Thanks for the advice. You are "the man" when it comes to lubricants. So I take your advice to heart.

I'm ordering some Swepco engine oil from you today. And I'll get the Delvac from Lufteknic since I guess the guys in the big rig shop probably won't ship a 55 gallon drum to me

Thanks again for the info. It's really helpful.
