transmission fluid change

Anyone tell me how to check transmission fluid level and how to change it.. 91 911 C2 thanks alot ....jerry

To check:

Open the filler plug (the one on top), not the drainer plug.
Stick finger inside, if you can feel the fluid level right at the lower edge of the hole, you're ok. If not, fill it up to the lower edge.

To change:

Open the filler plug first (so that if it is stuck, at least you can close it back up and drive it to a shop). Open the drainer plug and let it drain. Fill up (with a pump) until the fluid seeps out.

be sure to figure out the different plugs first

post pics here if in doubt before opening the wrong thing or twisting the air vent or something.

And don't just refill with ordinary "gear oil." Swepco is considered the gold standard by many.

Actually, while Swepco is great for the 915 gearbox, I'd use something like Mobil 1 or Redline for a 964.

And I swear by Synthetic gear oil. Great stuff even if not Swepco.

Well, whatever, all I'm saying is research what the right stuff is for your model and don't just put in 90-weight Lubrite.

I recently had my Fluid changed. The Porsche Dealer mechanic took it on his own to use Porsche Syn Fluid.

It supposed to be better on my 915 tranny but now makes more noise then what the PO put in, I assume Swepco. In the A.M. moving off a driveway ramp, I hear a rumble sound from what I discovered was my "Limited Slip Differential".

Is there any harm in leaving the Syn Fluid or should I change it back to Swepco right away? I have no performance issues.

Side note, I do like the sound of my baby now, it sounds more throaty and louder.

Any comments?

Yeah I know I should DIY, but I hate doing oil and tranny fliud changes, too dang messy and I don't have a garage. My neighbors at my condo would be quite annoyed by spilling oil/fluid on the common parking lot.

A 1985 911 should be using Swepco 201 (has additive for LSD already added).

Some say that syn is too slippery for the Porsche-style synchronizers which require a specific amount of friction to operate properly. No harm in using synth for a short time, but I'd change it back to Swepco if it was my car.

Enough Said, will do change on my Major Tune Up, Oil Change, Valve Gasket Replacement, Repacking the Bearings, Brakes & Rotors and Valve Adjustment.

I like the new sound but the "rumbling" sound can't be good for my Baby's LSD.

Thanks for the input, You Pelicans are Great!

Drain plug is obviously on the bottom of the tranny. Refill plug is on the left side of the tranny, look like the grain plug. That's how it is on my 87

I used Mobil 1 synthetic for the 964 (it smells weird) and Swepco 201 for my current 915. I have no idea when it was last changed in my 915 (at least 6 years ago) so I thought I would change it. I used the Swepco since everyone goes crazy about how great it is. It's working fine but didn't change the feel of the shifter one iota. I'm replacing the bushings now so we'll see if that helps.
