Masking Fuchs for painting centers - share your masking tips
Gents
I've searched the BBS, done my research and now I'm going to refinish my track wheels. I'm repainting the inside of the wheel black using rattle can Wurth. The lips I'll polish with PS21 stuff I bought from PP. My question is, Can someone please share with me the materials and technique for properly masking the aluminum, unpainted wheel lips? Any tips that someone can share with me? Pictures would be appreciated. Thanks Wellborn |
Black electrical tape works great for making curves. Also, fine line masking tape is useful.
|
Where do you get fine line masking tape?
|
use electrical tape! makes sure the tape is not cold.

instead of trying for an hour to make nice lines with electric tape (which is a fine idea), you could use wide blue painter's tape and "over-tape" the lip, taping into the black, then cut the line you want between the lip/black with a razor blade.

Nice tip, Gogar.
Fine line tape can be found at hardware stores. What I meant was to use thin width tape to get the fine lines, then use wider tape to cover the other areas. When I did my Fuchs a few years ago, I did it this way and they turned out very nice. My wife painted the center caps while I did the wheels. |

You might try an auto paint supply store for masking tape.
I have some blue plastic tape similar to electrical tape but it's 1/4" wide, and very flexible. It is widely used in the industry , and leaves a sharp edge unlike plain masking tape. good luck |
I used eighth inch striping tape from Pep Boys, black electrical tape, and blue masking tape. Sand lightly with 600 after masking, then black self etch primer and Wurth satin. I also taprd the lug nuts and set them in place to prevent paint from getting on the mating surfaces.

Just did a rough job on my winter Fuchs. Used electrical tape to train around the edge and then taped newspaper around the balance of the wheel. If you cut large arcs out of the newspaper it is very easy to mask. Took about 10 mins per wheel.
