Fuel breaking down?

I a previous post someone stated fuel started breaking down after 3 months? What happens to it. I have 3 5 gallon jugs of 101 octane I've been saving for that special occasion. One of them is at least 6 months old. It smells the same as the other jugs. Any comments besides use it?

Wow I just got the 356 running after sitting 14 months. I sputtered and popped for awhile but runs fine with a half tank of gas that is 14 months old. Am I just lucky or what?

356s are amazing machines with a lot of soul. At least that's how I feel about my '64 T5 Cab. This past Spring I had the Sears repair guy out to work on my lawnmower that wouldn't start. He said that the new California gas is destroying many Briggs and Stratton carburetors, and that he was backed up for the next week and a half doing nothing but lawnmower won't start types of calls. He thought the new gas is simply not stable, and will absorb more water and send it through the lines.

Maybe Solex carbs are less fragile than Briggs and Stratton carbs, lol...ya think?

I was able to get the 914-6 re-fired after sitting for about 5 years. It was not a pretty sight at first, but it eventually ran and leaked oil all over the place before I shut it down.

I have this 101 for the 930. If it looks and smells like the new stuff it should be ok shouldn't it? I work in a chemical plant so I'm used to comparing what smells right and what smells bad all the time. Does it work the same for 101?

Taste it, as a secondary test criteria

Just kidding. I think it would be allright, especially if it not stored in an area that would allow the tanks to breath heavily (IE regular temperature swings.) Temp swings bring condensation, which adds H2O. I had an offshore boat which was carbureted and had a 100 gallon fuel tank. I kept the boat outside on a trailer here in San Diego. Temp swings are as much as 20 degrees, but that's it. Some of the fuel must have been years old and for a while I only burned 40 or 50 gallons annually. It was sold for that very reason. I did rebuild the carburetor before it sold. Ran like a top. I did add isopropyl alcohol to absorb water, but pro-actively.

I filled all the jugs to the brim and haven't smelled any of that, oh so wicked 101 smell when I am around the jugs. I guess it would be a good idea to move the jugs away from the garage door though.
