Christmas Day update........
On Dec 17th, I bought 2-25 packs of calling cards for distribution by the Red Cross in Iraq and Afghanistan. The total for this was $1404.90. Since then, I've received another $332.58 (net of PayPal fees); so it looks like we might squeeze out another 25 pack before the week is out. Again thanks to all of you for the kind donations. Let's try to keep them coming! To those of you "over there", stay safe....... Mike |
You might check with your local legion post. The post here has a similar program going and they told me that with their military contacts, they can get more minutes for the money...(you can now guess why I'm not on the list here..)

..there's always going to be bigger, better, faster, stronger,..........I never claimed to be the only one or the best method for that matter. After much research, I've found the margins are so low on these things that price differences are negligible in the amounts of talk time we're talking about.
I thought this was a great way to pool funds from a group that continues to show generosity and compassion for a wide variety of topics and causes. I'd like to think we've done very, very well and from the replies I've received, I know it's appreciated. Soooo, pwd72s, whether or not you contribute here is your decision, not mine. I'm grateful to all that joined me here (and elsewhere) to at least make a difference for a few. Mike |
Mike, I just noticed that you're in Canada...I'm NOT slamming your efforts, I'm just saying that the american legion is doing the same thing...at least our local legion hall is...
|
I've seen reference to several similar efforts. All of them generous, no matter the amount of money or goods donated. Some days back, I checked the AL site and one AL post in Florida raised $1000 for calling cards amongst a bunch of other things. I'd say we've done great with $1700 raised so far.
And yes I'm in Canada. The vast majority of donations have come from Americans; hence, every dime of that money has gone to American service men and women via the Red Cross. Like most, I have strong opinions about the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; but this isn't the place to air them. The important thing is to remember the armed forces of both countries have been placed over there and anything we, sitting at home, can do to help is a good thing. Cheers, Mike |
Dec. 28th....
Well it looks like I've taken this cause as far as I can.......off the sticky and destined for page "who knows?". In the 20 days since I first posted, we've all raised a total of $1737 for the purchase of the calling cards. I think that's fantastic and you're all to be congratulated. I believe it's a great gesture and shows we care. I'll continue to accept PayPal donations at troopcalls@gmail.com for a few days yet; but will no longer post on the topic, other than to give a final update to the donor list. As in the past, all donors will receive direct email confirmation of the remaining purchase to be made. Any residual cash will be directly donated through the Red Cross. Thanks again to all that have donated, to Wayne D. for the space, and especially to all those in harm's way. All the Best for 2008 and beyond, Mike |
