79 911 sc alternator bearings shot?

new member! quick question, located in vegas weather has turned chilly for here at about 30 degrees, i mention this as i noticed driving the girl after parking outside for an errand ( she's always garage kept, climate controlled) 30 min. or so a non-familar sound from the engine, not really a bearing sound but a sort of low whine, when car was warmed up and driving to work no noise, when starting home a REAL growl (parked outside all day and cold) ensued and i pulled over to investigate, nothing obvious but the sound was metal on metal, had her trailered home by my mechanic,( do most but the very technical work on the car) and upon a closer look, noticed fresh scoring from the fan on fan shroud at the bottom, alternator is still charging fine, the shaft has no noticable excess play but his assumption is probably the bearings in the alt. haven't torn it down yet but upon looking at the conversion process to an alt. w/ internal reg., was wondering if anyone has seen this and what else should i look for. belts are all within a 1/2 deflection, any help would be greatly appreciated!.....

I had the same problem with my 78 SC. When I took the motor appart for a top end rebuild, I discovered that my fan housing was cracked in several spots. The deformation made to the housing was such that the fan blade touched it. My first guess was also alternator bearings, but they are fine. Those fan housings are made out of magnesium, and they do not age very well (just like the 2.7L mag cases). The fix is to replace the housing with a good used or new one.
