Isn't this a VW engine with a 911 fan?

More details on the engine and the 550.

Hey Guys,

The valve covers are copies of the type 547 which were used on the original 550 Spyder's, they are cast aluminum, these are cast slightly higher to allow for increased ratio rockers. A guy in California is makeing them for the Spyder community.

They would also look great on a 356 , 912 or 914 IMHO. He is making them for the type 4 motor used in those cars.

Yes the engine is a VW Type 1 block it makes about 150 HP which does nicely in the little car since it only weighs about 1100 pounds.

The car is a Chamonix/Beck that I have been working on in my spare time, it is about 99 % done right now if a project car is ever done. lol

The shroud and fan setup are known as Bergman shrouds after the guy who makes them. I have tons of pics of the car coming together, this design uses a full tube chassy not a VW pan and uses all new parts with some updating like disk brakes and coil overs.

The real Spyders are beyond the average guys wallet, Seinfeld got 1.2 mil for his when he sold it a few years ago.

Where did the fan and fan housing come from?
What do you think the final damage will be?

Todd

Hold everything. This guys a Cop!!
Seriously though. I've seen some cars on eBay go for around 20K.
And for that 20 I'm not sure if the engine will look as good as yours.
Is it a good bit cheaper to build them yourself?

Hey Tom you must have been asleep on here, pretty much everyone knows what I do for a hobby, lol

The car's you see on Ebay for the 20K price mostly need alot of work or are incomplete, the decent ones bring upwards of 30K on there. They have a cult following and a forum similar to this one at www.spyderclub.com

It is not always cheaper to build them yourself but it's a lot of fun and you get what you want and know how it is done.

The Beck/Chamonix cars are sold as " rolling chassy " they only need motor and trans and final assembly but most people begin changing stuff right away, hence the project in progress.

Some people use alternative power options like Porsche 6's or Suby powered cars, I have even seen a turbo rotary one, depends on what you want the car to do, I guess.

One thing I will say is that this is the closest you will ever get to simple driving, no top, no windows, no heat, no a/c, not much of a windscreen, you are sitting on the ground or close to it anyway, the top of my windshield is about level with the average guys belt line.

There are tons of video of them on youtube

I doubt it, that thing looks clean and well done. I think about doing a speedster replica every now and then. Seems like these lightweight replicas would be a blast to tool around in and when done nicely (like yours), I bet they get alot of stares driving down the highway.
