stereo replacement for stock SC

Hello:

My 1983 SC has a blaupunkt denver CD147 currently in the dash from the previous owner. It works, but the cd skips quite a bit. I'm looking to replace this unit before the spring, anyone have any good suggestions or recommendations on a CD/iPod compatible head unit that will fit an SC? I'm not looking to spend a mint because the car is pretty loud anyway.

Also interested in a set of new front speakers. My car is bone stock with the stock speaker grilles. Many thanks for your help.

Best,

Rob

I went with an Alpine head unit. The model name is irrelevant because I got it over a year ago. Most of the Alpine units are iPod compatible, even the lower priced ones. I have the iPod dock in my glove compartment, and all iPod functions are controlled on the stereo face.

Total cost of the head unit with built in amp, ipod dock, and installation was around $400.

I do like Blaupunkts, was very happy with the Pheonix in my last car ($115 brand new). Did a bit of research on them, then my 20 YO Kenwood got stolen whilst the car was being shipped back from Europe...

You may have noticed that when the CD skips, there's a mark on the CD afterwards where the head bounced off it... Only use burnt CD's in a car CD player...

Modern Blaupunkts have 10-second anti-skip - but more to the point, most understand CD-R or CD-RW's full of MP3's. So you can get 10 hours of music on a single CD.

Also, all Blaupunkts with a CD-changer interface (AUX port) manufactured after 2001 will take the adapter that charges the iPod, and may allow you to control the iPod from the head unit and display the ID3 tags on the head unit (capabilities vary, depending on model, manufacutre date etc).

However, the CD-changer interface has some limitations with the display length of the track information, number of playlists/number of tracks in a playlist etc.

As my 60Gb iPod isn't large enough to hold my music collection anyway, I bought the Memphis MP66 on Evil Bay, which is one of the head units with a USB interface. Gonna hide an external USB hard-drive under the dash - I figure a cheap 120Gb laptop drive will do it for now..

Alpine!!!!!

Just spent all day on speakers, amp and head unit.

The stereo either will be a Pioneer or Alpine. Most stereos offer IPOD compatibility, but the Alpine and Pioneer (at Best Buy) allowed the IPOD to be controlled through the radio rather than using the IPOD once connected.

Very nice and only $200 for the radio. My .02 cents anyways.

Good luck.

Blaupunkt San Diego, $129 w/ 5.25 Blaupunkt speakers for the doors $39. iPod cable for the Blaupunkt $35. Radio comes with a mini remote, no need to reach over and mess with the radio controls. Plenty of power and no disco looking faceplate. Blaupunkt was OEM for Porsche, no mods or external laundry necessary, clean install. Low buck w/better the good results. JMHO

fwiw I found my nephew's alpine a pain to scroll thru the iPod.

I bought a kenwood and an iPod connector. It is basically a cable with RCA jacks on one end. It also hooks up to car battery power so you can recharge iPod.
