I had $$ burning a hole in my pocket!! Check it out

Had a few dollars burning a hole in my pocket so I figured what the hell. Some people like to spend money on the girlfriends, mistress, wife, kids, house, etc. I like to spend on all the above plus my favorite car. With a little help from Pelican Parts; Pete Engel at Westminster Auto Upholstery; and Mark at Bigmark design(fellow Pelican) I was able to make my car just a little nicer. You know the ole' slippery slope thing. I guess I may stop somewhere around 80K.

A few of my gauges toward the left side of the dash were fading. I also wanted to replace the plastic lens with glass and just refreshen things up a little. I called North Hollywood Gauge and discussed the job with them. They were curtious and very helpful. However, they quoted me around $500 and a 4 week turn around time. OUCH! This included repainting all face plates and rings, replace plastic lens with glass, replace the notorious plastic gears in speedometer (preventative maintenance) and convert the clock hole into a CHT and Voltmeter. They wanted too much for a spare "can" so they recommended I use the clock as a organ donor. Well, I was a little uncomfortable with my gauges gone for 4 weeks and I was emotionally attached to my VDO clock. What if I was not happy with the new combo gauge? What if I wanted to put my beautiful clock back? This is when I got smart!

I called Mark at Bigmark design bigmarkdesign@aol.com. He was able to complete the entire job in one week and let me keep my clock. He even rebuilt the clock and all other gauges. He painted the inside of the "cans" white to make the new LED's brighter. His price the same and with great customer service. He is highly recommended.

Next, my original seats were really in good condition. However, I made a huge mistake having them refinished by a local "highly recommended" mobile upholstery guy. He left black over-spray all over the interior and window tint. I was not happy with the final product at all. He should have removed the seats from the car and did more prep work. He eventually paid to have the tint replaced but it was a major hassle. I wanted new seats so I bought a set of 1993 RSA America sports seats. They are great but the stock cloth material did not match the leather interior. This is where Pete Engel at Westminster Auto Upholstry comes in. He is well known for his work on Porsches and Ferrari's. We decided to replace the carpet, redo the entire door and finish everything up with Guards Red deviated stitching.

The gauges look nice.. but where are the shots of the redone interior?

Brother 07-09-2008 09:27 PM

Bigmarkdesigns is great. He did a quad gauge for my 914 and told me what I needed to get to change all the lights over to LED's. Well worth it.

His customer service is very good. I had some really stupid questions when I was wiring that thing in and he just kept answering them.

Did you have fun getting that CHT sensor on a sparkplug? Total PITA!

The lighting was not great. The color match of all the materials was perfect!

Next Project: Complete suspension overhaul via Elephant Racing/Pelican Parts

Here you go Ben! I was unable to add photo so here is a link to my custom M&K exhaust. The single best performance and sound upgrade I have yet to complete. This system makes my $5K stereo a waist of money!

Mark (bigmark design) is the man... he refreshed the guts and refaced my tach, and added a voltmeter. Great guy to work with, very friendly and knowledgeable. Can't beat his prices.

The sport seats look fantastic, this is definitely on my to do list some day, thanks for sharing!

jh225 07-10-2008 06:47 AM

Very nice.

Red stitching really sets it off.

carnutzzz 07-10-2008 08:03 AM

Very nice.

I just bought a Momo Tuner wheel with red stitching- would look right at home in there.

Rich Lambert 07-10-2008 09:20 AM

Very nice! Those seats are beautiful.

Are you going to do the suspension work yourself? Talk about a freakin' "slippery slope".

gregg911 07-10-2008 09:40 AM

The car is beautiful! I love the seats in that car. The matching red stitching on the doors is very nice!

I'm on the slippery slope with you. I just finished a complete replacement of all suspsension parts.

Just curious, what did you spend on the interior overall.

mnmasotto 07-10-2008 10:37 AM

Reply to some questions.

The interior work took one week and cost me approximately $3500. However he did many other small projects which were included in that price. To repeat what you can see in the photos should be a little cheaper.

After installing the new system I do not know how I lived with this junk for so long! The sound of the new system with Gen 5 Muffler is absolutely breathtaking. Oh yeah, I forgot, I have done a video of the new exhaust system in action but was completely disappointed with the sound reproduction. I asked a local video expert who said that it was a combination of the cheap microphone and the direction of the sound in relation to the camera mic. Also, the stock microphone does not have have a wide enough sound range to pick up all the subtle notes?

Masotto,

Maybe it only cost you $3,500, but I think collectively you're going to cost us a lot more... Great job, It's perfect...
