Body Leading on a '68 912 Chassis - Factory?

So, in the process of getting the many layers of paint off this chassis, i have gotten into a couple corners in the rear that have a very large amount of leading bodywork on them. In particular in the corners of the rear valance where the cover latch lives and at the top of the channel where the engine covers sits in...

Take a look at these pics. I didn't realize they used lead at all from the factory, and maybe they didn't. Maybe this is all old school body work, etc... can anyone clarify this either way? And if there was lead used, is this an abnormal amount or is this common? I'm not going to put lead back in, but i'm trying to decided if want to pull it all out, that stuff is heavy as hell, lol.

If the factory put it there, I don't think you should remove it.

Unless there is rust around those areas that needs repair, leave it. Worked perfectly for 40+ years.

I went into those corners aggressively with a heavy wire wheel and tore the hell out of it, lol

Odd that there is not a drop of lead anywhere else on the chassis besides in the rear on the deck lid crossmember and upper corners...

Factory used lead as final body fairing. I would not remove unless you are handy with hammer & dolly or planning on body filler. Lead craftsman were real craftsman in those days.

yeah, i wish i hadn't dug into it as far as i did... but i didn't know it was lead.... the only spot that's going to require some edge reforming is one of the top edges of the rear deck lid channel. I'm amazed that they from that hard edge with lead.

Lead also used between rear of rocker panels & rear quarter panels, rear quarter panel to panel across rear of engine bay and at base of windshield to front cowling piece. Lead used anywhere a large panel is connected to an adjoining panel where the joint would be visible: those seams were filled with lead.

Watch the "Made by Hand" youtube videos. I think they do lead work in those.
