close up wheel well vents?

Any reason to not hammer close and seam seal the smugglers box vents in the wheel well area to prevent moisture and dirt from coming in the front compartment??

this

FWIW - all right hand drive cars have a patch welded over those louvres... I *think* they have something to do with the old Webasto heaters (RHD cars never got Webastos 'cause they don't have smuggler boxes) - I'm sure a resident Guru can confirm the reason.

I don't think there would be an issue sealing the louvres...

Yes there were there to vent the heater as I've read. Couldnt find anybody discussing it but it just seems like there is a lot of wind dust and moisture going up those things right next to a spinning tire.

There is also an exhaust pipe leaving the smugglers box under the car (at least on my 73)

I have always thought they were there because of webasto heaters, but never understod it. The smuggler box must get plenty of air from around the steering shaft???

I'll probably seal up my vents, but I think I'll just put some silicone sealer from the inside.

Good info Fishcop

Had to use Google Advanced Search to find this link. Grady Clay confirms they are for the Webasto. I ain't got them (the vents), hence my ignorance above.

Check out post 24.
