I nearly owned one of those before I bought my 911 but the deal feel through. For those who call it a chicks car, meet em at the lights, those things haul and the sound is intoxicating. There's lots of easy mods you can do to them, a popular one is to clear out the mufflers for some bad ass sound and polish them, the stock ones come up a treat as they're stainless from the factory. People also turbo and supercharge them, they're awesome, I'll find one one day and buy it, would love the roadster too.

z3m coupe

i have a 99 z3 m coupe essentially the same as a 2000 model in terms of power. they are heavy...plus 3000 pounds and develop only about 250 hp....so i was not impressed with the power. the 2001 and 2002 models had the m engine that was rated at about 320 horsepower. perhaps your car has the european engine which was over 300 horsepower. my coupe is heavily modified to include a six speed...all at considerable expense! check the welds in the rear compartment! no comparison to my modified longhood!

Yep you guys got the s52 with 250something and the later s54 321hp, we got the s50 and s54 both rated at 321hp. I think the advantage of the s52 though is lower compression so throw a turbo on her if that's the case! There was a young dude, like 18, blowing the doors off a lot of cars in a turbo s52 roadster in the states, the vids are on youtube somewhere, I think he was around 500hp and did all the mods in his garage.

Too bad about the P car, but as far as far the BMW goes, the M coupe has always been my favorite. BMW's ugly duckling. Enjoy.

Love the M3! Nice job!

I don't see them too often (which makes them all the more cool) but when I do see one ... I stare.

I just ditched my 996 for an 01 m roadster. I don't know how anyone can call a 300+ hp car a "chick" car. I would have had a harder time giving up a 993 though.

I really liked the M but after lurking on forums, everyone seemed to measure the life of the engine in terms of track-days attended. And it seemed like that number was very low. I hear the s52 is a bit more reliable. The s54, with its gorgeous throttle bodies, seems to have an issue keeping bearings in the block.

Interesting thread. I just sold my '96 C4S but still have my M Coupe, and find it to be a more interesting drive, both good and bad. The C4S was pretty viceless; a very easy car to drive with high limits, no doubt because of the huge tires, and 4wd. The M Coupe never feels as settled or composed and it's a lot easier to upset in the turns.

I was frankly disappointed with the handling when I got the car, even though it had Dinan springs, shocks, and sway bars already when I bought it. I sent the car to Dinan about 4 years ago to have them put their "ultimate" suspension setup on it, including custom valved Konis, plus all their reinforcements, and the car somehow ended up returning with their 3.38 differential, a supercharger, oil cooler, intercooler, wheels and a bunch of other stuff (it's now one of 10 cars Dinan converted to their ISR3 spec, eight of which were roadsters). I definitely don't recommend any differential ratio shorter than 3.38; 80mph is about 4000rpm in top gear IIRC. The car is better sorted now in terms of handling, but still does not feel as reassuring as the 993. It sure is fun though, in a way that the 993 was not. The short wheelbase and all the power makes it very exciting in a way that reminds me of an old 911, and in that respect, I definitely agree. It's fairly easy to control, and you can drive around sideways all day long if that suits you.

As for the looks, yes, it's an unusual looking car (my brother calls it an upside-down c*ck and balls), but the hatch part of it makes it surprisingly practical (it's the car I take to the grocery store the most frequently). It gets a lot of looks (frequently puzzled ones), more so than the 993 in fact, and the overall reaction is positive. It's a pretty sinister/badass car, especially because of the size of the rear tires, and because the Dinan software car automatically turns on all of the fans for the intercooler and radiator for 3 minutes whenever the car goes on boost, so when you hear it coming down the street, all you hear is whoosing air of the fans. It's a bit like Darth Vadar.
