For the guys that interested in the RSR. If you are looking for specific details the car will be with me until the 29th Nov. So I can take pics or measure parts for you. Here is a short story. The car came to South Africa at the end of the 90s. I met the owner through Porsche club here. After looking up the chassis number and two years of looking around I figured out the whole history of the car. All we knew when we started was that thwe car raced le mans, targa florio and that it was an original RSR. The first thing i found that showed how the car looked was a fly scale model in the le mans livery. I then mailed fly models and said if they can make a model they must have pictures and they send me 5 pics that is in the link below. Since the history on pbase we have found some more pics ,2 at the targa and some all over. We also received help from John Starsky on the history. In april we replaced the 73 le mans decalls on the car. This was a leap of faith for the owner but as he didnt think it will look good but were willing to try it. I entered the car at our local concourse and won. Here a pic at concourse and a link to some more info

As mentioned before I borrowed the RSR to copy a few parts of the car. Here is the first of them. I removed the roll cage and measured it up. For every ones reference I did find out that these pipes were rolled and not bent. The total cost to get these pipes bent and cut was the equialent of USD 30 ,I could not believe it but thats what they charged me. Will post pics of foot pieces as soon as they are made. Please note the taped up roll cage is just a mock up

Scanning the rear wheel arches on the rsr to produce a set of similar shaped ones for my ST. No turbo arches coming close to this car.

So, Porsche beats the things out of metal by hand on a wooden buck...

then they are reproduced using an electronic 3D contour scanner, hooked up to a computer....

I guess the irony will be extended further in another 50 years, when somebody uses nanobots to build the fender up in situ with ultra-strength fibers extruded from genetically modified spiders.

Is this the point where it stops being a replica and becomes a clone? I say your meddling with Gods' work. Say no to GM Porsches!

... but everyone should.

They should be as common as erector sets - can't get the kids started too early...

Forgive the ignorance...

...but Leon, I was under the impression that the front flares on the ST may have been similar/same as the 73 RSRs but I thought that the rear flares on the ST where not the same as the early RSRs?

As a fellow South African (albeit a green card waving resident alien in the US of A), I'm really impressed! I'm in the early stages of converting an '80SC into an ST replica but definitely don't seem to have access to the resources you have.

Anything I can gain from your experience will be put to good use, I promise.

Ek is mal vir al daai fotos van die RSR!

hi Cuanlee

As far as I know .....the rear flares are not the same size but the shape are the same. The rear flares on the RSR is made to run 11" wheels and on the ST they are made to run 9" wheels. But the main thing is they are not turbo flares. So i will take the RSR flares and make them a bit smaller. If there is some one that knows better speak now.

Well the secrets out i have some backing of an aircraft parts manufacturer. We manufacture composite, plastics ,metal and alu parts for many aircraft manufacturers across the world and in the USA. So I have a bit more help than your average home builder....and you all thought we ride elephants to work.

ja wat daai kar is rerig mooi

can i ask why you chose to replicate a 30+ year old roll over hoop design?

i assume that you not intend to compete with the car? if you do, roll cages have come a long way.

911 ST generally refers to custom-ordered factory cars with "S" performance options but (lighterweight) T trim. As such, almost any custom early car ordered from the factory for racing purposes can be considered an ST...

hi
are you going to remember to use the longer trailing arms on your car since your 912 to RS conversion had the rear arches in lwb 911 position and the wheels in swb 912 position..

Well we do have some guys that go around on wildebeest but I will be politically
correct when i call them in touch with their feminan side. Even buffalo dont last that long as transport the one pictured below made only two trip to the race track. Maybe next time i wont make him pull the car and the spares

I will do some time trails and tar rallies etc but the car will never get on a circuit packed with other cars. The car is also a clone and a new roll cage just wont do it for me.
On the suspension...... I am busy with that now. I found a torque tube from another car and will either use the lwb mounts from that or i will manufacture new mounts. The traling arms has since pic below been powder coated. I will use steel ones as they are period correct.

Thanks Wayne

I'll take that as a license to be very liberal in my interpretations for the ST build I'm doing ;-)
