Sunroof removal - help with the high speed wobbles..

Hi guys, spent today getting prepped to remove the sunroof from my '89 project car. This is the machine that I am fitting the 6 speed G50, 3.4 engine etc etc, it is almost completely stripped.

Two of the things I want to do is to remove the drip rails and remove the sunroof. The drip rails are just cosmetic, but for the sunroof it is a bit of a deal as I am 190 cm (about 6' 4") and am not terribly comfortable in a sunroof car as I sit pretty vertical....so it really should go.

I have a roof section from a non-sunroof car to weld in, I have read all the threads and am pretty comfortable with the welding in part....but the more I look at it the removal of the sunroof structure/module seems pretty daunting.

A bunch of spot welds at the front and sides of the opening, a bunch of brackets tied into the roof structure, what looks like a crimped over portion of the roof at the rear of the sunroof opening and what appears to be a glued in section that the sunroof slides into (rear roof section).

I am tempted to not drill out the spot welds, rather just use the air saw to cut out the sunroof section....get the thing out of there and then clean up the miscellaneous brackets after the sunroof sheet metal is out of there...

Any words of encouragement....I mean, I know I am nuts, but insanity does like company....??

Dennis

That is the way I would do it. The old roof is scrap, after all?
I've been on the lookout for a roof section for a while here in Blighty so have thought about this a lot.
You don't strike me as the kind of bloke that needs much encouragement, Dennis

Try this thread: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=447061

Or some others in the Racing Forum about extreme roll cages where they take the roof off for building the cage and weld it back on after it is in.

These guys at Rudtner's Racing may be able to help: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=338674&highlight=clean+slate&page=2
