Best paint long term for fan shroud? Krylon? Plastikote?

In the middle of rebuild and just was wondering if you guys that have redone your fan shrouds could tell me your long term results. Those of u that used Krylon Fusion or Plastikote as mentioned in other threads, have u been happy with results. Anything better out there? Thanks

Isn't the shroud the piece that is missing from the above pictures?

What??? you can't see I painted my shroud with Krylon "Clear"

LOL... I was thinking the fan housing piece around the actual fan.... My bad.

I think I just used regular Krylon on mine. Worked out just fine.

I get the best puff can finish from plastikote engine enamel. That has been my experience for over 15 years now and I have alot of experience with air pressure spray guns.
First warm the part in the sun, under lamps, or with a heat gun but only get them warm not hot because that will boil off the solvents too fast and make bubbles in the paint.

The first coat should be a light tack coat that doesn't completely cover so the second coat sticks and doesn't fisheye. The nice thing about plastikote 500 degree engine enamel is you can spray on very wet 2nd and 3rd coats in approximately 20 minute intervals and it won't blush, wrinkle, or fisheye at all in my experience. Other puff can paints will...
It comes out a very smooth thick durable paint finish that looks alot like urethane enamel when dry.
It takes several days to fully dry and I try to leave parts sprayed with it in the hot sun after about 6 hours of air drying time.

If you want a more durable satin finish puff can paint that doesn't flow out as smooth and glossy as the plastikote engine enamel when spraying heavy wet coats but is tougher, then russel epoxy puff can spray paint marketed for painting motorcycle frames works very well.

I had mine lightly sand blasted and then I painted it with Krylon red (actually the Canadian equivalent). Looked like stock, only a bit better (brighter). No issue whatsoever. Looked good, stood up very well.

Krylon makes a plastic/fiberglass paint. "Sundried Tomato" is the color I used on my 3.8 and it seems to have held up very well.

I then shot a thin coat of semi-gloss clear.

It's not too glossy but i think it looks nice.

I think I have a full can left if you are interested.

I used Krylon Fusion for Plastics, without primer since it is formulated to stick to plastics.

Anyone know the correct "matching" color for the green shrouds (2.7S engine)? I like the green (it's bizarre) but it looks a tad beat up - I just left it raw fiberglass for now but if I can spray it with something I will.

Can someone please tell me what is the best way to paint or upkeep the actual fan. I first buffed it out and that was no good because it kept tarnishing. I then had it clear coated but even that tarnished. So, I am going to strip that off. What has everyone had luck with on a long term basis

Sorry for highjacking the thread but I thought it was really closely related

No worries, i had the same problem for years before i threw in the towel and just started powdercoating all my fans. I know not stock, but Tom Butler (tom1394racing) did a nice job powerdercoating his to an 'RSR' style finish.

If you find the right powdercoater, he could probably match just about any color u want.

Yep, it was Krylon "Fusion".

We got 360+ hp at the wheels which with 15% loss should be at 415 ish hp at the flywheel.

Tom Butler's fan finish is a secret formula used by Auto Associates and duplicates the true fan finish.

I bead blasted my fan and clearcoating them only, if and when it needs to be refinished it will be an easy job of re-clearing.

I did however clear powder coat the fan on my 3.2 M491 and it has held up very well.

That pic was taken during the build, the fan nut was installed

A few years ago I did some experimenting but to no avail on duplicating the original finish. One day when I have time I'll get back to it.

See this link: http://www.krylon.com/products/fusion_for_plastic/

The finished product.

Here is the same question answered over in the engine rebuilding forum. Essentially, you use Krylon Fusion or a professional auto paint to get the best results.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/showthread.php?t=344387&highlight=shroud

Enjoy!
