The raw nature of the air cooled cars coupled with their ultimate performance is, I think unmatched. It's more rewarding because it makes you work for it. Just human nature to appreciate that which is earned, not just given. Women have known this since the beginning of time.

I have owned all sorts of "nice" cars over 40+ years, some quick, others stylish but mainly smart functional large saloons. Only occasionally would any of them get a second glance from bystanders but my '88 3.2 gets waves from all sorts, pedestrians; other drivers etc. Even the boy racers in their rice burners want to know all about her and almost all express a wish to own one.

I agree, I've got my comfort car full of power and I've got my truck but that little 911S is just like a friend sitting in my shop. No leaks, purrs when warmed up and is fun to drive. When I ask my wife which car to take on our nights out there is no question. She loves that little red car too.

When you consider what these cars cost compared to other cars on the road its incredible the interest they arouse , anyone who says they dont like them is either tellin porkies or wishin they had one. I ve had mine for three years and cant imagine not owning one now. Although , I dont use it as much as I should ,its great to know that if the notion takes me I pull it out the garage and off I go . Ten out of ten grin factor.

I think "Sterile" is the perfect word for the new breed of 911. To me a 911 is a car that should "talk" to the driver.

The other great thing about the 80s 911s is that they're $20K in really good condition. That's a lot of car for the money. And they're built like tanks.

If the 911 "talks" to the driver what does it say?

Mine says, "Late at night while you're sleeping I leave little drips of oil on your new garage floor."
"If you take this corner too hard and decide to let off a bit, I'm going to decide to swap ends and back into that wall."
"Even though I handle curves like a go-cart with glue tires, I also transmit every undulation in the road directly to your a$$ just like a go-cart too."
"Ooops it's time for a valve adjustment again."
"Anything below 2000rpm is a dead zone for me."

My 88' is a lot of fun, but I'm playing the devil's advocate in this thread. Instead of using the term "sterile" I'd probably use "refined" when describing the newer cars.

Would you be interested in adopting another 40 year old son?

Although my 05 Subaru Legacy GT might be quicker and AWD can make you feel like a hero on the On Ramp / Off Ramp Gran Prix, I took my '88 coupe to a Seminar on the other side of the state yesterday, three hours round trip 1/2 back roads & 1/2 highway. The Porsche commands your attention. The Subaru you can just turn the key and go.

Great thread, all. Although you all realize you are preaching to the choir

I love having the tactile, aural response of the SC. Though she is my "Trackmeister"-in-progress, I drive it maybe 2-3x/ month to keep her exercised. Glorious. Every second from the moment I pull off the car cover. My 993 is a sublime commuter, and she has suspension mods in keeping with the "true" 911 feel (IMHO) ...she feels like an SC gone to finishing school, but can still kick your butt in an alley brawl. That said, there is nothing like having my SC in all it's visceral glory. Long live the air-cooled generation!

Excellent.

An option to artificially increase intake noise?? Wow. Didn't know that existed. Oh, you can definitely hear my Webers on "full suck" at WOT.

As said above, if I won the lottery (which I don't play, so good luck...), I would find the finest Guards Red 1989 turbo Carerra I could find.

And park it next to the '70's Carerra RS I would buy first.

Jeff
