Todd - No MIG, actually you can spot the welder a few photos up when I posted the exhaust. We are using a Miller Diversion 180 TIG. Mat has been MIG'ing for some time now and this was his first time TIG welding!! Pretty Dimey stuff, I'd say. That bandsaw has been a huge part in this project, sorta slow but always gets it done!

I agree. That one looks to good to mess up. 912's in good condition original condition are getting rare.

^ Remember, this thread started in 2009! We were way past the point of no return, long, long ago.

wow, looks like you guys are making progress!!! great seeing you today mike and sharing the photos. i may have to steal some ideas for my phase 2 since mine is running well as it is, i just really like your crossover coolant tube angled and rotated, looks clean. why is your brother always the one dirty in the pics, i think there may be a labor inequality going on here

This weekend we got to work mounting the engine in the car:
• We modified the old engine mounts to sit in the forward corners of the chassis for the cleanest "most stock" kind of install. •*We welded up a new engine mount bar to attach to the factory mounts • I installed a fuel return guide tube into the chassis to route the new fuel lines through •*We started installing the silicon elbows of the cooling system and mapped out a bunch of work that needs to be done there • We were also able to start fitting the oil coolers for the engine and trans, map out the fuel lines and pump, and took some ride height measurements. Even though the new engine and trans combo is heavier than the old stock 912 driveline, we still seeing a solid 7" of ground clearance from the floor to the bottom of the pan. Next up is to finish the cooling system plumbing, run and mount the oil and fuel lines, and start mounting (and likely fab'ing) an intercooler. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Just an FYI - When the CV joints hang like that (instead of being suspended by a bungie cord or chain of zip ties or...) they can and often do bend the interior flange into an oblong shape. I know - I've been there done that. If you can find a way to suspend them, you won't have this problem. As they are currently resting, it would be a good idea to release the clamp and pull back and look at the flange to see if it is bent.

Maybe this has already been covered, but what is the weight of the Subie engine plus radiators and water compared to a 912 or type 4 engine compared to a 911?

2.0L 911 - 405 lbs 2.2L 911 - 380-405 lbs (magnesium case dropped weight) POLO - 286 lbs 912 - 212 lbs - 240 lbs Subaru - 271 w/flywheel, injection, etc (but not water or radiator!), 186 for SOHC long block, 202 for DOHC long block 914 - 311 lbs? (from questionable chart) Raby? Pontiac 2.8 liter V6- 345-376 lb. (for point of reference, with all extras) |

my car is about 100# heavier iirc via my corner balance scales comparing my current set up to one a few years ago with a type4 motor. the same motor as above with a WRX trans and 930 cv's for reference. I think im at 2100 now (steel body, slab sided swb with ST bar, and lighter ST/RS seats and no sound deadening.)

Had a big couple of days with the 912:
•*Mounted both the trans and engine oil coolers •*Mounted the trans cooler pump •*Mounted the fuel filters and pump, ran the lines •*Painted the tank and the trunk area •*Mounted the front bumper with a pin-and-grommet system that makes removing it a 5 minute job with very little effort •*Finished up the front radiators (added fans, mounts, and silicon hoses, etc) Really starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel now. We're ready to hook up the fuel system to the engine, the cooling system just needs a few more details and then its ready for water. The trans is just about ready for oil! My goodness, we're getting close... close to debugging all the fab work we've done, haha. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I am boggled. I hope you get the car moving with this motor, and then I hope you work the bugs out in 10k miles.
Do you expect this car to have, like, heat and what not? |

I thought that video was 80s at first, but I think it might just be 90s Canada/Oceana.

looking good guys. I cant remember if you said you were going with a center mounted rad too. what is your total frontal area of the radiators, just curious. what are you doing for fans? just a thought, those screens look cool but i think may be too restrictive to let air pass thru. perhaps something like expanded sheet metal? keep pushing forward, your making great headway, the light at then end of the tunnel is approaching
and no, its not going to take 10k to work out the bugs, maybe 9k but it'll be a fun 9k at 18lbs boost

Thanks Draden, yeah we are pretty crafty but that would be redic! Big progress though lately and looking forward to getting wiring harness soon along with that other details such as throttle cable assembly, wiring up radiator fans, mounting electronic boost controller, fab'ing up and mounting intercooler system, and of course some sort of muffling device like a muffler.... Lots to go but getting closer!!!
