Sourcing rubber knobs for 1972 dashboard
Where can one find the rubber surrounds that fit around the dash controls/switch emblems? The old ones have gone to the great junkyard in the sky. I think there are 4 or so needed.
Do older VW's share these possibly? I called our Host and we drew a blank.

Nice. Thanks for the info. That's a step in the right direction. $22 each though. That'll be @$100 for 4. May be the only choice but I bet there are options.
Anyone know of anything else: MB or BMW use anything similar?

This cracks me up, and if I did not see this all the time I would not let this push my button and reply.
You want a replacement part for your car, no idea where to get it. BAM there it is even BRAND NEW, Thank you BUT it is $20. Maybe TRE should just pay the tooling charge to remanufacturer these to look just like the original ones THAT YOU CAN NOT BUY, make them stock them and just give them to you because yours broke. Do you honestly think that VW, MBZ or BMW will have them for less $$?? You can call every dismantler around and try to buy some old ones, and of course you will tell them NO I dont want the switch, just the cover so the parts place can corner the market on switches with out any knobs. Better yet go to your local AP and buy some **** cheep plastic switches for $5 and not worry about it. These people are doing us a favor by reproducing items we need, we should be happy as a few yrs ago you could not buy them at all. This is not aimed at just you, I bet I have had 20 people send me notes on cars being parted, do you have the knob?? No I dont want the switch, that would be too much$$, well WTF think many folks are looking for switches for sale less knobs!! Or other such trivial part from a complete assembly. Here's a thread by pelican Midlife from 2004...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/178398-check-out-these-knobs-dash-knobs.html I don't know if has any left, but I bought some from him, and they're very nice.

can the more modern (Carrera) knobs be put there instead (without replacing the entire switch)?
I actually prefer the look of those. |

Yes, you just have to use the older style nuts.

Good question. I hadn't thought of that. I did check the posts by Midlife. Now there's someone with can-do. Thanks for that link. It didn't come up when I searched. I'll send him a pm.
On other issues: I'm all for supporting folks but have to be realistic about my restoration goals. Bastardized, and I mean that in a good way, 911T's aren't really the same thing as genuine 911S's. TRE has a nice looking product and there may be others so that's what research is about. Meanwhile 4 knobs for nearly $100 to my door puts a little dent in my enthusiasm, YMMV. Regardless, thanks for all points of view. Rant accepted.
