Does my 89 (carrera, not 964) have a base/clear or a single stage?

Getting some body work done and the shop doesn't know; I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

Thanks

have them take a piece of 600 grit paper and scuff the panel to be repaired....if it scuffs white on the paper...it is two stage.....most all were 2 stage....if the shope doesnt know this...maybe you should choose a different shop.

+2! If it is Guards Red it is single stage. All the metallics are two stage.

Allow me to clarify: The shop thought it was a base/clear, and I had thought 911s up to 1990 were single stage.

The car's black if that helps.

If the car is in the shop, it would take them less than a minute to figure this out.

Porsche didn't transition from single stage to base clear all at once...

If the shop doesn't know, look for another one. If they say it's base clear, you should probably defer to their assumed experience and knowledge. If you don't trust their juegement, why go there?

The trick with the sand paper scuffing works and will tell you without a doubt. Except if the car is white.

An easier way would be to take a mild buffing compound and rub it on the surface then wipe with a clean towel that's a different color than the car. Color on towel, single stage, no color then you'll have a nice shiny spot forcing you to buff the whole car
