thermo fan for A/C evaporator?
Hi All,
Has anybody ever put a SPAL style thermo fan on the evaporator of their air conditioning system? I don't mean one in front of the evaporator to push more air into the evaporator. I mean it being used to pull the air through the evaporator and out the aircon vents. It seems that the latest S style fans produce heaps more cfm then conventional fans. Could be a way to get more airflow? Opinions? Thanks, Adam

I have thought about that as well and I cant figure out a way to make it work because of the way the plastic housing is manufactured for the evaporator. The supply air fan is mounted above the evaporator. The delivery air is sent into the cabin via an aircraft hose/duct. Removing the housing for the fan makes the mount for the hose/duct disappear. The centrifugal fan that Porsche designed does do the job if it is working correctly mounted down on to evaporator base so it won't rattle. If the clips are broke get a couple of small towels and lay them across the top than gently close and latch the smugglers box door, it will quiet things down.
The real issue with the 911 AC system is not the evaporator or the delivery fan it is a lack of condenser heat exchange to get the freon cold enough so when it goes into the evaporator it sends colder air into the cabin. I am adding a cold air kit (additional condenser and fan) into the drivers side rear quarter panel wheel well this spring, $599.00. funny you mention that kit. I am just about to order it. Everything I've read about it has been positive.
I'm just trying to find a way to create more air volume coming out of the vents...

Griffiths makes an upgraded evaporator fan that pushes a lot more air than the stock unit. The only trick is that it will only fit the evaporator box for the '85 and earlier so you have to source that style box.
Porsche, 911, 930, fan, motors, blower motors Also, if you're going to pull the evaporator check to make sure its not simply clogged up. When I removed mine it was full of crud.

Any word as to why they don't make that fan for the 87 on?

so judging from the picture of the later style evaporator box, it seems like a thermo fan would fit nicely.
Do you think the thermal fan would produce more airflow then the stock one? The motor on the thermo fan does seem to be much smaller...
