21 on the dot (20 years ago).
The old beater long since sold and likely dissolved in a pile of orange rust somewhere. ![]()

Got our first, a '68 with soft window, in '74 in West Germany and it rotted out from under us. I was 38.
Got the second one, a '71T Targa, in '76 and still have it. I'm 77 next month.

I was 21, it was 1979, and the car was a 1972 914. While I was in college I had a summer job at a Scott Paper factory in Chester, PA. I did preventive maintanence vibration testing on the paper machines. BIG fricking machines, 20-30 feet tall, 25-50 yards long (at least that's what I recall). It was hot nasty work crawling in and on the operating equipment, checking the bearings on dozens of rollers. It was quite dangerous now that I think about it, but payed well for a summer job. Every cent went to pay for college. But the last summer I started looking at 914's. Found one that looked good and I got the OK from Dad to divert some of the "college fund".
When I went to look at the car the owner was earily 30's, just had a kid, and had bought a Mercedes, 230C I think. He was impressed with what I knew about the 914, and was honest. The car had been in a accident and had the front clip replaced. In retro spec it actually was a good repair, but I was clueless then. He also said he thought there was something wrong with the transmission. Did I care? Hell no, I was blinded by lust! I would have probably walked if I looked at it today, but not that day. I took a test drive and it felt good, no shifting problems. I had $2200 and offered it all. Negotiation skills I had not developed! He was really cool and reminded me of the transmission and suggested $1800...when was the last time that happened? Sold! But on my way home the transmission started acting up. It would not shift into 2nd or 4th. I was sick. I spent the next couple days figuring out what it was going to take to remove the transmission. Then I noticed that the long shift shaft had a coupler in the middle, and the gears that didn't work were both when the shifter was pushed forward (first is left and down). When I took off the access plate, I found found a loose coupler bolt. Tightened it and never had a problem again! Brought the car to Atlanta in the back of a UHaul truck. Drove it for several years. Finally decided I needed something with AC in Atlanta, but I kept the 914 for fun drives. Rust and a few minor dents (not my fault) have sidelined the car, but it ran when I parked it many years ago. Still have it. Sitting under a tarp in a shed, waiting to be restored I guess. I'm a sentimental sap, I probably should have got rid of it. Maybe it will be a nice project to do with my grandkids in a few years.

I was 17yrs old when I bought my first car which was a 1960 356B Porsche roadster. I paid 1500 bucks for it. I traded it and kept the engine which I still have today. I'll be 55yrs at the end of this month. I know at one point that car got shipped to California so if anybody on this site has that car I would be happy to give them the engine so everything could match. I bought my first 911 two years ago and haven't driven it yet.I still own a 64 356C and have possession of a 61 356B Knotchback which is a true convertible with a factory welded on hard top.

I was 22 when I bought a 924. I owned it for 11 years, sold it because I had 2 small kids at that point and no seat belts in the back. Wasn't much room for car seats anyway. I always had regret for not buying a 911. I listened to friends that told me to start off with a more affordable Porsche and see how I like them. Well, at 49 years old I finally bought the 911 I always wanted. Wish I bought it years ago.

I was 27. We bought it to sell, but I could never let anyone get in the drivers seat. I've had it for 2 1/2 years now. It's too much fun, too nice of a car, and I don't think I could replace the first one and be as happy with the second..... Maybe... but I am too chicken to chance it!

Dial 911

36yrs. old
Hi...I bought my first 911 in 1980 when I was 36; married with 3 children. My wife just about drove it more than I did in that I had a company vehicle and she often used it rather than our family car to take the kids to and from school.
For many years I had always liked the looks of these 356's so this is what I started to look for, a restored 356B coupe - The main difference from an 'A' was the new 4 wheel disc brakes I eventually found a 10/10 restoration that was for sale at a local Porsche Club meet. I agreed to the owners price, which was $12,000.00 at the time, and then made an arrangement with the fellow to take it for a drive after work the next day-Monday. I was so disappointed in how it drove. The 93hp was very unimpressive, and although not a pure VW motor it sounded and performed in a similar manner- It was just too much VW in so many ways for me that I decided not to buy it ![]() The search was now on for a low mileage 911 which I found within 4 months. It was very nice one owner 1970 911T with all the books ect. I also, of all things, ended walking away very disapointed from it due to its colour... It looked like VW's beige but it did have a very nice black interior. (I am not anti VW - I had years earlier owned a two year old 1967 VW which was a great little machine) After thinking about it for over a week, I decided that if it was still available I would buy it and have a complete colour change to Black. It was still available so I bought it and drove it from the seller's home directly to a shop that I had pre arranged to do the job. It was then stripped, taken completly a part, and in reality was restored. I had the trunk, hood, doors, the windshield and rear window seals replaced, including buying new front and rear signal/brake lens. I also had all of the latches; hood, trunk including other bits and pieces such as springs, re-anodized to their correct colour. It was repainted in a 2 pot mix urethane and then cured in a bake oven. If you care to see it when apart and when finished, have a look at it in 'my garage'.

50 and I picked it up from the transporter last night! Here is is being backed out of the carrier. To say I was excited is the understatement of the year. Took my 12-year old son along and we had a ball driving it home. '84 Cabriolet.
