964 C4 Conversion to C2?

Excellence recently ran an article where the owner of a 964 C2 Tiptronic converted his car to a 5 speed manual, against the advice of numerous folks.

The conversion worked, the owner was happy, and I thought that was pretty cool.

I've recently become interested in the 964, as more or less daily driver alternative to my 1966 911, which only comes out on sunny days (if at all).

Trouble is, many of these are Carrera 4s, which are too darn heavy!

Has anyone ever taken the AWD stuff out of C4, to make it lighter?

Is this recommended? What's the downside, if any, other than originality?

Thanks All!

It can be done...

Sometime ago there was a kit to convert the C4 trans to rear drive only.
I read that in a thread here but be buggered if I can find it.

Sorry. I can't be more specific than that but it is possible.

I do not think it is practical on a 964. A 993 is easy. Apparently.

There is a writeup in the Porsche Panorama magazines April and May 2007. An owner did the conversion and documented the process.

That's the information I was going to share (except Werk even provided the dates- good on you!) and I recall the article saying it wasn't easy, but yet not incredibly hard. Point is, somebody else has done the work to find out what needs to be "tricked" into making the car not worry about the missing AWD componentry. All you have to do now is follow their lead!
