Help with ID on crankcase and sylinders.
 
Hi!

I have a 1977 911S With over 300000 miles on it, the car runs great and still is tight to drive.
However lately i have heard a knocking sound under load, its worst when the car is cold. And it looks like it leaks oil between the head and cylinder.
Looks like I have some broken head studs!:rolleyes:

I am going to open the valvecovers tomorrow to check it out.

I have taken some photos of the crank case numbers and the cylinders, is it alusil or nicasil and is the case the original 1977 2,7S case?

The 77 pulls studs out of the case, if you try to retorque the heads the studs will just pull as you turn.
Its time to find a 3,0 or 3,,2

Thanks for the answer, but it doesn't id the crank case or the cylinders.

Is the casenumber consistent with a 2,7S 1977?

To me it looks like the cylinders have 11 cooling finns, Does that mean it is Nicasil?

yes, the .7R means that the casting is the last version of the Mg. crankcase. It was used for '73RS 2.7 and some 2.4s, '74 2.7 and '75 2.7

Today I removed the lower valvecovers and found this on cylinder 6....

Nut and washer had come loose...

The rest of the lower nuts was in place but on the left side I found this...!?

What torque should I use on the headstuds ?

Someone with some interesting techniques has been working on your motor. That's a hell of a way to seal the rocker shaft in the second photo. The nut you are holding secures the cam tower to the heads. The nuts with the allen drive on them down in the holes where the fins are secure the heads to the case via the head studs. Torque depends on what motor you have. If all the allen head bolts are tight by hand, you don't have a pulled or broken cylinder stud.

That's how my lower rocker shafts were sealed when I bought my car.
They have since been cleaned up and sealed with these... Porsche 911 & Carrera Cam Towers & Timing Chains - Page 2
