Which brand/grade fluids do you use for your daily driver 911?

Which engine oil brand and grade?

Which oil filter?

Which tranny fluid?

Which brake fluid and pads?

Lot of talk about Brad Penn, Super Blue ATE, etc but aren't they overkill for a daily driver? My car is a non-track 911 that gets driven only 5000 miles per year. No autocrossing or rallying. It is actually driven by my wife almost 100% of the time to/from work in 50 degree weather in the winter and 110 degree heat of the summer. If your car is a daily driver only, which brand of fluids, etc do you use?

James Brown 05-16-2010 11:52 PM

I use the best stuff out there. Some daily drives can be just as hard as track events on the engine and brakes. And, i'm worth it! Beside, there is good stuff (brad penn, swepco, ate, oem) and there is everything else you find at pepboys. Cost isn't that much more for piece of mind.

ruby911 05-17-2010 05:06 AM

James Brown - doesn't the factory/dealer use the same stuff you buy at PepBoys?

javadog 05-17-2010 05:22 AM

Swepco 306 14W40
OEM Porsche oil filter
Swepco 201
Ate brake fluid
OEM Porsche pads

You didn't ask but I use Shell gas, no ethanol

JR

Milo2361 05-17-2010 05:33 AM

Shell Rotella T 15w40 (10w40 winter months below 20 deg. F( 5 of them this past year))
WIX filter
swepco 201
whatever brake fluid the shop that did my master cyl used.
oem pads

91 octane gas wherever i can find it, and more often than not without ethanol(hard in Western NE)

twistoffat 05-17-2010 05:45 AM

Mobil 10W40
Miller transmission fluid 80W90
Miller 300 plus
OEM pads
Normal Euro 98 octane super sometimes shell Vpower

If your wife drives anything like mine, you should use the best oil and brake fluid you can find. Seriously, stop and go traffic in the heat is very hard on any engine, esp. air-cooled; and a Porsche is a precision machine, why use anything less than the best? For me, that's Brad Penn, Swepco, ATE, and OEM Porsche.

Mobil 1 15w50 VTwin changed at 6K or 1 year, whichever comes 1st
Porsche or Mahle filter
Swepco 201 though will try Kendall LSD next change - 10K on my road cars
Motul 600 with Porsche pads - Fluid bled/semi-flushed with fresh yearly

brads911sc 05-17-2010 09:03 AM

Exactly Ruby.

I use Mahle OC54 filter on oil filter. Napa Gold is also excellent and the same price. In fact many say its better. I still use Mahle because I bought 4 of them the last time.
ATE Blue brake fluid.
Kendall Gear Oil.
Kendall GT1 or Valvoline VR1 motor oil.

I can get it all locally with no shipping or hassle except the oil filter which I bought as a lot of 4 off fleabay. Our host also sells it with no hassle.

I think if you can get VR1 at your local autozone or GT1 at your local distributor.. both at $4 a quart... then buying Castrol, or some questionable oil for $3.50 a quart doesnt really make alot of sense. right?

Brake fluid and pads.....not so important for a street car.
Just keep the fluid fresh.

I would use the "correct" tranny fluid so that your synchros and LSD (if you have one) are properly lubed.

Factory oil filters are the best and not that much coin.

Finally, and most importantly, you should re-read the long post on Brad Penn motor oil.
If that doesn't prompt you to put that stuff in your engine, no matter what the car's intended use, nothing will.
The engine is the single most expensive component on a 911.
Really costly if something goes wrong.

Guess I don't understand why some wish to save a few cents or cut corners in maintaining a 911.
Just not worth it in the end.
If I were buying your car.....I'd want to know if it had used Brad Penn regularly or some less expensive brand.
It would make a difference to me on whether I wanted to buy your car or not.

Kendall GT-1 20W/50 non-synthetic engine oil

OC 54 oil filter (Mahle)

Kendall dino 80W/90 GL-5 NS-MP gear oil

Castrol LMA brake fluid (used to use Ate Blue for track)

Jurid/Pagid/BHP brake pads depending on what I'm testing (used to use Porterfield or Pagid competition for track) - BHP pads on car now, slightly noisy but I like them.

Vincent Hill 05-17-2010 12:54 PM

Mann or Mahle Filter, Vavoline 10 w 40 Vavoline Brake Fluid (Blue used to be Silver container), Carbon Metalic Brake Pads (Performance Friction now called PFC) The only thing new I am trying is Lucas Oil in the Trans/Axle. I was using Mobil 1, but the 915 trans did not like it! When I am not using a full Molly grease I use Mobil 1 syn grease.

I Never use Shell Gasoline! Short story was my 1976 would stop running and then after checking everything it would fire up and we drive away. After changing fuel Pumps adding extra 1 way valves, a 924 Accumulator, Mounting Fuel Pressure guages in the engine compartment, one day someone said, What kind of Gasoline do you use? He then stated that he had "Heard Things" about using Shell. I started to use Texaco and others and all of a sudden all of the problems went away. My thinking is the arromatics and additives they add to the fuel made it Vaporize faster and in the Hot engine compartment I would get Vapor Lock.

laundromatt 05-17-2010 01:26 PM

I don't know what the PO of my car used for the gear oil, but I just ordered some Kendall NS-MP and plan to switch it out soon.

As for the other stuff, I use VR1 non-synthetic 20w50 (as of yesterday, got it from AutoZone), Mahle OC54 (from Pelican), and Motul brake fluid.

James Brown 05-17-2010 01:31 PM

Ruby, not sure what Porsche dealers use now but I would not be surprised if they use the lowest bidder for consumables. It's a cost thing.

In CA the only gasoline is Chevron. It's in a class by itself on top of the heap, nothing else comes close. I once "fixed" a customer's non-starting lawn mower by suggesting that he drain the Union 76 out of it and replace it with Chevron.

Helios59 05-17-2010 03:11 PM

My Dad would never, ever use Shell. He said it didn't mix well with other gasolines.

This was in the 60s...

aldente295 05-17-2010 03:39 PM

There's at least one thread out there that goes into some depth explaining why you should no longer use the factory oil filter. Mahle for me.

rusnak 05-17-2010 04:57 PM

Mahle oil filter. The Porsche factory is selling some sort of crap oil filter; do not buy it.
Chevron gas is the best. I can't say much though because I usually fill up if I drive by a
Costco with a half tank empty, and I've been known to gas up in some out of the way places.

Valvoline VR1 Racing 20-50.

No matter what type of gas you use, run a tank of gas with Techron or equivalent before each oil change.

I have become a fan of PBR/Centric/Pagid ULT or Ultimate Ceramic pads. They have huge initial bite and low brake fade. They work well with the factory rotors.

Swepco 201

brads911sc 05-17-2010 06:36 PM

Doug, I prefer a car that is NOT running Brad Penn. Just my .02. Yes, I have read all the threads. Pleanty of other better oils like Swepco 306, VR1 or GT1. Good luck.

Brad

Engine: Brad Penn 20W-50
Oil filter: Mahle OC 54
Transaxle: Kendall NS-MP 80W-90
Brake fluid: Castrol LMA (or ATE Gold)
Brake pads: Textar

Gasoline: Shell V-power (I don't have Chevron near me, and Shell at least qualifies as a top tier gasoline: http://www.toptiergas.com/). In any event, I am a fan of periodic use of Techron concentrate.

BTW, Chevron has a free iPhone app to help locate the nearest station. Helped confirm for me that I'm SOL in CO....
