Nice,
Can you paint it silver for me :P |
yes, complexities...
Ideally, you'd sell your '87 and buy a 993 and an early car - a 1970-71 with the wonderful road racing shift patter typ 911 tranny. THEN, you'd have to make a decision on which car to drive on each trip, since you can't drive two cars at once. For just looks, you could mock up a 993 body shell out of FG and let it sit in the yard... For driving, if it is very hot, then the 993 for its better a/c if it is a high speed run, then the 993 for it s lower wind noise, and better high speed performance on straights and sweepers if it is a curvy road, the 993 will be faster but less involving in some ways if you favor driving an automotive anachronism however, then a 356 will always beat even the earliest 911s so... |
Both!
It should be noted that girlfriends/wives will appreciate the 993 over the 3.2 regarding comfort on long drives and road trips.
And that means more long drives and road trips with your partner - a plus in my book. My goal is to buy a widebody 993 and turn my '87 into a track car. First thing I'll do with the 993 is add a ducktail like Scooter's: http://homepage.mac.com/drew1/.Pictures/Scooter1.jpg That is a fine 993 example. |
I think honestly it really depends on what you want in a car. I think both the 87' and 993 are excellent cars SC's too. A lot of guys get jaded over a bad first time experince, or not being able to really aford the car, over all in all I think the 87's rawness will be missed and the 993 will be a more lush in features like AC etc. Different strokes for Diffferent folk. :)

I was going this route after selling my 1987. When I started pricing things like suspension upgrades, consumables, etc. I decided to go the other way...
Sure, AC is great but as many have said - it's a whole different driving dynamic. If I wanted a DD and Porsche - then a 993 or 997 would probably be the way to go - and they as fast as all get up, right out of the box. Me - I like to personalize my car - I like to drive it on the track fast - I like it to be raw and responsive. The 993's are excellent cars - but there is definitely a little more disconnect (and $$) |
I've owned an SC and a 964, I drove a 993 recently and really enjoyed the power of the car, but the entire driving experience felt very remote and heavy even compared to the 964. The steering in my 964 had much better road feel and the comfort, AC, shifting and braking were very similar.
The SC was the most fun to drive, but I find (for me) the 964 is the best blend of feel, looks and performance while still offering nice convenience and safety features (ABS & Airbags) and the 964s have good heat and AC. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1277909229.jpg |

BOTH!!!! :D
I traded my '80 SC for a '90 964. For the first year or so, I loved it - and I still love it. The more I drove it though, the more I missed the raspy, rawness and light, sportiness of the SC. I missed it so much in fact, that I went out and bought a '71 T. Yeah, it's not the same as the SC. In my opinion though, it's even more raw and sporty. Man do I love that car! I still own the 964, but I much, much prefer my early T over it and the SC. And that's the joy in all of this. Drive as many different 911s as you can and find your preference. You won't know until you drive 'em! |
