Road trip in a 930

i have not read thru all the posts, but as one mentioned earlier, starters do tend to overheat and the solenoid fails. This happens a lot on long summer drives
Sometimes it comes back after the car cools down, sometimes not.
So the tip is to park your car so the front end is pointing outward, so you can get a push start

Hi guys . . . well the second day (Saturday) in the 930 was a looooong one. I spent Friday night in Eugene OR and enjoyed a burger and beers at Cornucopia (highly recommended) and then did a little sightseeing around the downtown area. Then spent the rest of the evening reading through more of the paperwork that came with the car. Old editions of Car and Driver from 1978 that showcased the 930 turbo. How cool is that!!! Then bright and early at 5am I left Eugene and had a beautiful drive all the way into CA. Oh, I forgot to say . . . even the gas attendants in Oregon were so cool . . . when I pulled in they all commented on the car and didn't give me any hassle about filling it up myself. So going through Grants Pass, Ashland, and then into CA. The 930 was running like a champ. I LOVE THE TURBO. It was addicting to see the needle in boost guage lift off its resting point and feel the car take-off. Even just put'n through town and listening to the exhaust popping and burping as I cruised through. And the nasty little note the exhaust makes when the boost comes on as your are shifting through the gears. JUST TOO COOL. Ok back to the drive . . . so now I'm onto Mt. Shasta and Shasta Lake which is truely beautiful. I envy all those that live in the Northwest because the countryside is just amazing. And the highways going through Idaho, Washington, and Oregon were nice and smooth and the other drivers were very courteous. So now I'm into CA and the scenary has turned brown and it's getting hot. Just out of Redding my AC stops working . . . blown fuse . . . so I change the fuse and off I go. Now I'm in Vacaville and the AC is out again. So I tough it out, roll the windows down and try to convince myself the hot air that is blowing into the car is actually cool . . . but it's not. I make it to Walnut Creek just outside of San Francisco and stop at the local Porsche Dealer. I find a Sales Rep that hooks me up with a Technician and he gives me a handful of 25amp fuses. So once again I swap the fuse and off I go. Thank God San Francisco was having some cooler weather, so I left the windows cranked down and the AC off. Further down the road I end-up in Monterey which is my scheduled stop for the day. Only I find the hotels/motels are sold-out and I can't find a room under $200. So I call my Brother in Paso Robles and he tells me to come on down. Argh . . . been on the road for 12 hours and I've got another 100+ miles before I can crack a beer and call it a day. So guess what . . . I'm on the boost . . . screw the gas mileage . . . and I make it to Paso Robles is just under 1 hour. Now that was fun. I have a great dinner and beers with my Brother and hit the sack looking forward to a short third day (200+) miles home.

Not much to say about the third day on the road. I took it easy because the Highway Patrol was out in force and I didn't want a ticket. The 930 is geared for highway crusing . . . amazing how the RPM's just loaf around 2500 at the 70 MPH speed limit. San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, Buellton/Solvang, Santa Barbara, and finally home in Thousand Oaks. Called the Prior Owner to let him know the car ran like a charm. So I made it home with a grin on my face and really no issues with the car. It was a great road trip and I will do it again in a heartbeat when I have the chance. LIFE IS AWESOME.

I broke down and had the wrong fan belt in my kit (ended up being the smog pump belt). make sure your belts are right.

I think I'd go for it. I'd take the usual tools, including AAA card and cell fone, plus a can of flat-fix, a couple bottles of oil, a box of fuses, a flash light and a fan belt. I mean, what could go wrong (heh, heh)?

Monterey to Paso Robles in under an hour on the 101! I have made that drive many times, but never that fast...I am sure that was a good time. Too bad you couldn't find a place to stay in Monterey so that you could drive HWY 1 down the coast to San Simeon, then back over to 101. Glad you had a good trip!

I just had a great road trip in my 930. It beat all others I have ever taken including coast to coast or any of the twice monthly midnight runs I did between Phoenix and San Diego. I seldom had it under 100 mph and didn't have a single issue with cops. Pics coming.
