Winter work begins early

The Florida registration on my car expired but it needs some down-grades to pass the inspection in my new home of Pennsylvania. And I have much to do before next spring so; I’m starting “winter work” early.

On the list of things to do is:

Remove SSI and install stock exhaust with Cat and Air pump. Clean out and test the AAR, adjust the valves and correct a minor oil leak.

Front and rear suspension rebuild with new bushings all around, 21/28 Torsion bars and new sport shocks on the rear. And I’ll replace the rear wheel bearings “while I’m in there.” Might be moving to Linea Corsa 17x7.5/9 wheels, too. Of course all this work means lowering to euro height and a good alignment and corner balance will follow

I’ll also rebuild the pedal assembly, do some rust repair and replace the window motors.

Other potential work includes, building and installing RS door panels, replacing seats with something racier, replacing door seals and …..?

I’m venturing into new territory for me, so I’ll be looking for guidance along the way.

Thanks in advance.

Glenn - Hold the phone. Will you be driving the car more than 5000 miles per year? If not, then go get a beer and relax, as you will not have to go through an emissions test. I live in PA and have never had an inspection problem, and my cat went "bye-bye" ten years ago.

Just trying to save you some time.

Welcome to Pennsylvania.

This is my daily driver and I'll do 10-12 thousand miles a year. Fortunately, the '78 only requires a visual inspection. And at my age, I wouldn't be surprised if I swap the exhaust for a track day then forget to put the stock back on.....

I'm near Pittsburgh and with my 80 SC withe a euro premuffler I never had a problem with the sniffer test. Now it's just a visual. Most techs think the heat exchangers are cats. Worth a try.

Finally got to spend some time on the car today. I got it up on jack stands and started on the front suspension. Didn't take long to hit a snag. Front anti-sway bar came off without too much trouble. But I am stuck on the ball joint nut.

I know it has some serious torque on it so I tried the breaker bar - no use. Tried the air wrench - shook a bunch of dirt loose but no budging the nut. Sprayed it with PB Blaster and let it set for an hour then tried the air wrench again - no use. Remembered that the pelican catalog mentioned using a chisel so I tried that. Banged at it for a while and nothing moved but I managed to shear a chunk of the nut.

Before I waist the three remaining notches on failed attempts with the chisel I thought I'd ask for .... HELP!!!!

any sure-fire tricks?

I tried just about everything you did. Finally cut the nut off with a Dremel - five minutes.

I may have to try that.

BTW just to save a few PMs - I am NOT selling the SSIs. Gonna put them back on after inspection.

Did you just use a standard cut-off wheel? Any risk of damaging the control arm?

Thanks Greg. I have to pass a visual inspection. They have to see the cat, smog pump and PCV valve. No testing of function or emission output.

Got a little more done. Control arms are off and boxed up. They are headed to Elephant Racing for a rebuild service. And I am waiting for a couple very expensive boxes full of parts from our host. So I decided to start removing fenders to tackle some rust spots where the front fender meets the body under the windshield...

here

and here

Started with the drivers side rocker cover and found this...

So I'm looking at new rocker covers or going without.

Getting afraid of what else I will find...

BTW - anybody know how to take off the piece under the front bumper?
