Hi,
I've tried to find Porsche Workshop Manuals in CD, but haven't found them. What did I do was: I have the whole set for early 911 as paper version and I've actually scanned them to .pdf and have them in CD (total of about 2000 pages!). My question is: what happens if I want to sell copies of this CD? Illegal? I even tried to contact Porsche asking if I can sell these but they haven't given me any replies... // jyri -from finland- |

I would guess it would be copyright infringement, but it never hurts to ask....

It's illegal, of course.
But I'll send you twice as many CDRs as it fills, out of the goodness of my heart, if you'll make me a copy. ------------------ Jack Olsen My Rennlist home page • My Pelican Gallery page • My Porsche Owners Gallery page |

If you can post the pdf files where I can ftp them then I will be happy to help you assess whether there would be any copyright infringement involved!

Its probably illegal and you should be careful about advertizing it on a public forum like this. It would be foolish not to want a "deal" like that. If one happened to show up in my mailbox, I certainly wouldn't send it back. Be careful.

As long as you don't reveal your full name or address I don't see what Porsche can do about it. I would certainly love a copy.
I don't really see Porsche losing much revenue from protecting this stuff from being copied, but they obviously do care as previous examples have shown. ------------------ Phil Garner'72 911E Sporto '87 VW Golf CL 1.6 with Weber (x1!) |

Porsche should fault itself for not digitizing the manuals by now. I'll also help assess the legality of the project if you'll send me a CD to evaluate.

If it's illegal, this guy is really pressing his luck. . .this is a pretty official looking CD of the 7 volume 964 service manual. He must be burning copies because I've seen this same ad 2 or 3 times. I thought about bidding but decided to go for the legal version instead. My local dealer says that a CD version is not available. Have a look:

I saw one of these go for about $230 (paid 260 for the "official" version, ie., legal). Occupational Hazard: Longwinded Answer Ahead. It is a copyright infringement (provided the material was copyrighted by Porsche in the first place.) Even if you put a copyright disclaimer saying that you make no claims to the copyright of the material presented, it's still a violation of their rights to the commercial exploitation and distribution of their content. So, if you're just copying their content and distributing on a CD format, it's a no no. If your CD distribution is actually something different from the Porsche material, it's a little grey. It's their content, but your compilation. Your unique edits, organization, annotations, etc. *may* provide some protection inasmuch as it changes the content from Porsche's protected material distribution. Just a thought: why not contact Porsche and request a license from them to re-compile and distribute the information on CD?

This is almost certainly illegal. David Griswold was selling them at $100 a copy on another 911 bulletin board. David, are you Zaphod 32 on this board? Maybe someone else has bought Griswold's CD and is about to pirate the pirate.
Now he has gone on ebay, Griswold will be easy to track down. He also has a Paypal account, so all buyers could be tracked. IMHO this is theft. John ------------------ John Miles, 964 C4 1990 John's 964 Web The Porsche 964 Group |

on another token:
all of the manuals to our software here come on CD-ROM. we can read these manuals, and we can put a copy in our network drives because we are licensed to use the software. a license to USE is not the same as a license to distribute. if we were to copy these manuals and sell them to others, then that would be illegal. and the "who will catch you" argument doesn't fly. i spend all day laughing at people that think that what they do on a computer is "anonymous". i'd stil say that it's illegal though. if it was legal then we could get them from Porsche as an official publication. you can get official CDs on other cars, check this out: http://www.rb.com/resource.htm?subject=26 but if YOU made a copy of that CD and sold it to someone, then that would be illegal. obin ------------------ Wej doen niet mee an de moduh [This message has been edited by Obin Robinson (edited 07-03-2001).] |

What if he doesn't sell them? Would it still be a crime? But gives them away. All he's doing then is providing knowledge for the rest of us.
