Its illegal (unfortunately) and that's really the end of it...

But I do think it very short-sighted of Porsche (and all the other manufacturers) not to make this stuff freely available on the internet.

Why?

Because its only a small minority of people who do any kind of work on thier cars beyond very simple service tasks like topping up the oil.

Because people like us are encouraged to try even more ambitious repairs and need the spare parts to do it.

because it would demonstrate a mature and sincere belief in Porsche's semi-offical "car for life" attitude.

- roGER (who's already forked out the $$$$ for the hardcopy manuals).

This is definitely illegal, and PCNA is currently pursuing legal action. I wouldn't want to be this fellow on Ebay.

Now, if I wanted to do this, there is a way around it. I could sell a copy of the microfiche manuals to you for $35, and then offer a $65 conversion fee to place them on CD. I would be selling a legal copy of the manuals, and you would have a 'fair use' copy of the CD. We're looking into this right now...

Wayne, I hope you are able to make that happen. How about the cab manual too?

I see the microfiche on e-bay all the time for $30-$35...gotta assume that they are legal. Bought the hardcopy on e-bay because I didn't want to buy an illegal CD or buy a big ol' fische reader. Wayne's plan would have saved me more than a few bucks.

Hope you can do it Wayne.

Oh yeah, I believe it is David Griswold selling CD manuals on ebay (need to check the ad to be sure).

I have most all of the paper Factoy Workshop Manuals and got tired of running to the local Kinkos to make copies of sections to avoid getting the originals greasy. Since Porsche only offers these in paper and microfiche...I decided to have my manuals converted to Adobe PDF format and put on CDs. As you can imagine, it got a little expensive since I had to hire a place to scan them, another for the artwork, and another to burn the CDs.

I tried to contact Porsche regarding legality of redistributing, and/or redistribution license. After no response, I decided to sell a few to recoup my costs. By no means is this a commercial effort, and I will only be selling enough to cover my cost. I also had posed the question regarding packaging with a set of Microfiche...but have not received a response.

The CDs do clearly indicate that all material is copyright protected and for backup purposes only, for what that is worth.

I have not tried to hide my identity, nor mislead or misrepresent.

David

Holy **** Dave! I hope you know what you're getting into here, I think you're going to end up in some real hot water.

Godspeed to you.

Standard Operating Procedure is that someone will e-mail Dave and tell him to stop. If he stops (hopefully after he's already recouped his cost), that will be the end of it.

I had something similar happen to me for a much milder affair (hosting a link to a downloadable shareware program on my site).

"...willful, knowing, deliberate, intentional" it all adds up to the same thing. The only variable is not whether or how they'll come after you, just with how much heat. It starts with a Cease & Desist and escalates pretty quickly to start adding up to real $$$, either in damages, or defense costs. Better off using the extra $$ for mods and upgrades. IMHO.

Isn't there an educational exception to the copyright laws? Couldn't you just hold a class and distribute the CD's as a text book?

The fellow in England (Phil Davies) who was selling the PET CD copy (same parts reference most dealers use), was shut down very swiftly, by some extremely threatening letters from Porsche. He did not go to jail, as someone erroneously posted here, but sure could have.

3 weeks ago, i was doing tech inspection at the PCA Club race. during a break we were talking about the porsche factory manuals, and the subject of an electronic one came up. one of the PCA Racing techs said that "a guy that was selling the Porsche PET manuals was put in jail for selling them."

i'm just relaying what they told me. i don't think they'd have a reason to intentionally mislead us. i also heard this when i ordered a few car parts a while ago from the dealership. they said that they would love to have something similar to the Porsche PET, and they were thinking of getting it... but the guy was "unreachable" so they could not get it.

maybe someone else was selling copies of PET, and that's who was in trouble?

I'm replying to all post, thanks for the great amount!

This is not (or going to be) a business for me! I'm not trying to money out of it. I'm not the guy in the ebay and I've scanned these pages from my (original and paid) paper version of the Workshop Manual. My problem has been, that the pages get very dirt in garage, but it's very easy to cover the keyboard and see the items I want from CD.

Who am I?
My name is Jyri Kerajarvi. I live in Finland, Europe and am here in this forum with my real name. I'm a father of six lovely kids and love Porsches. You can find our family from www.kerajarvi.com (sorry, only in Finnish language).

If this appears to be somewhat legal project, you can contact me directly to my email (kera@iki.fi), and we'll sort how I can share the CD.
