70 versus 72 fuel tank color

Question,
Is the 70 and 72 tank color the same? I noticed original tanks carry a different shade than others that I attribute to years of fading.

Not long ago SEM 61003 paint was considered to be close to 70 color gray.

Not sure if 72 would be the same as a 70.

Thanks

This thread kicks around the color question, but I don't think anyone specifically had an older car: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/942272-gas-tank-coating.html

The famous "700 Mile S" has a good shot of the tank color for 1970, though some say it may have darkened over time:

Ask Scott Longballa on ESR. He will probably know.

Not sure if it is much help but here is a pic of my '72 gas tank taken just this week.

That looks exactly like the grey on my 1972 911 (Before my brother in law went and painted it blue! ) Repainting it is on my list of jobs!
I found a pic of the tank on the 72 when it came out although you will have to zoom in.

If you want your 72 to match the faded shade here is the solution. It is a perfect match to the aged gray . . more like a tan. I got tired of trying to find the original gray and used this on the top and a gray on the bottom . . looks great. If anyone wants to touch up the old tank this matches perfectly . .at least to my original tank faded color.

And apply this paintable undercoating first to replicate the factory finish.
