Question `87 Carrera Rear View Mirror Fell off

The windshield has what looks like a round tape where the button was.
The button is clean as a whistle inside the bracket.
Did a search but wasn't getting clear answers.

1) I don't think I can hold the entire mirror steady for 5 minutes waiting for the adhesive to dry. How do I get that button out of the bracket? Do you just pry it out?

2) Has anyone tried to I glue the button onto the old tape still on the windshield?

3) For me, mirror glue is hit and miss (even with all the proper steps). Any idea where I can get the button tape?

Tap it off the mirror, use jb weld and duct tape it in place until the glue is firm, then use a safety razor on the squeeze-out. Razor blade off the old residue first. Mark it on the outside with a sharpie so you get it back in the right place. Wait overnight before carefully tapping the mirror back on. Sometimes the spring clip in the tab needs to be weakened a bit so the mirror install doesn't pop it off.

Just make the spot on the outside with a marker. Get the windshield mirror glue from any auto parts store. Scrape off the area on the windshield, remove the button from the mirror button and scrape it clean. Follow the directions on the glue package and it is easy.

Almost all windshield place will do it for you for a nominal fee as well. They have the good glue.

I had the same problem, used the mirror adhesive kit from the local auto parts store. The first hot day it fell off again. Then I used the clear JB Weld 5 minute epoxy , still on a year later.

The biggest “secret” is scrape and clean both the glass and the button. It may look clean, but put a razor blade scraper on it and crud come off.

The epoxy may hold, but often has unsightly glue blobs. The two part windshield glue used as directed will work. Clean everything first.

The glue blobs are the squeeze out around the button. Use a razor blade to trim it off while the jb is semi set. Never had any luck with mirror adhesives.

You don’t have to hold the entire mirror onto the glass. This is not an instant-bond crazy glue setting adhesive.
There is a 3M structural 2-sided tape but it’s not available everywhere, and you’d have to buy a roll for the 1” square you’ll need. You could try 3M automotive trim tape not sure the # but it’s the type that is super super thin.

As others said, mark the spot where you want the remount on the outside with a Sharpie or tape so it’s aligned like the old one.

Clean inside windshield with alcohol, clean off any/all old adhesive off the little steel button.

It’s the button that receives the adhesive and you should tape it down so it doesn’t move, separate or slide down after gluing and allow the button to fully cure (taped down) before attaching the mirror.
Best to allow to cure overnight 24hrs or more before affixing mirror. Don’t do this in sun or hot windshield as it can dry out the adhesive too fast.
You can try the general use JB Epoxy but everything depends on surface preparation, there’s a dark gray product that works well (has some flex) but it’s key to only use a tad amount just enough to skim the button, again tape it down so it can set. My concern would be bonding to smooth surfaces. Most epoxy require scuffed surfaces, certainly nobody will do that to a $$$ windshield.

Look at the instructions here :

Thanks for the replies.
-The button was really in there tight and I didn't want to use force until I knew it was supposed to come out. It came out with help from a small hammer.
-Went looking for JB Weld epoxy. Found a half dozen different flavors but they had either glass but no metal or metal but no glass.
-It makes me nervous as to how little of the button is protruding from the mirror. I wondered if the tape would work better but I don't want to buy a whole roll.
-I talked with my bodyshop guy and he says the glass people have the secret sauce that will hold forever. Next step is to go see what they charge to put the button on. It might be worth paying a few coins to have it done right.

Wait... mine slides off. Isn't that intentional? I just have the metal button stuck to the glass. I think I used Loctite Mirror Adhesive based on some old posts here. That means you can stick the button and hold it for 5 minutes (or Duct Tape as suggested above).

And the other side looks like this ... interesting how the striations are aligned.

Just make sure you put it back at the right height. The PO of my 3.2 mounted it too high. I can only see about 50 feet behind me, vs as far back as I want.

Took it to a auto glass shop - it took 15 minutes and he didn't charge me.
Gave him a tip and drove home knowing my mirror won't come down again.
