Carrera 3.2 Fan Housing

I am looking for information on how to clean the fan housing on our '85 Carrera fan housing. Did the housing come from the factory with a clear coat like the fan?

I don't think so. I don't believe the fan was cleared, either.

The fans didn't have a clear coat. There are many threads on various treatments of the fan and housings. A lot focuses on what amounts to a penetrative treatment for magnesium that looks like the factory treatment. This is the easiest way to get a longer lasting pretty finish on them.

Painting doesn't last very well on the fan because the speed of the blades will make even water droplets take the paint off the leading edges. (Think of it as an axial turbine instead of a fan and you will have a better picture of what it is doing.)

Treating/coating/painting the housing lasts better because it isn't moving but because of the close tolerances you will usually see marks on painted examples where the blades have come in contact or marks from airborne junk that got between the blades and the housing.

Powder coating is about the only coating that will stand up to the abuse but it has to be done right. You want to reduce the diameter of the fan by a very slight quantity to compensate for the thickness of the coating on the housing and you want the fan hung flat during baking so the coating is completely even around the axis of the fan.

i believe the body wax used for shipping and still under many 911 tubs and on the trannys was also used on the fan and housing

some members were able to locate small size purchases instead of buying 5 gallons of it
