What is the alternator housing made of?

I know it's made of magnesium but I would like to know if it's pure magnesium or some kind of alloy? Mine, like many, has a crack and I would like to have it welded.

I don't know how long your crack is, but drilling a small hole at the end of it will stress relieve it, and stop it from spreading.

I'm sure you mean the fan housing, not the body of the alternator itself. The fan housing is a magnesium alloy - welding such material is VERY specialized. Do a search for "fan housing crack".

Yes, it's the fan housing and yes, I know it's a very specialised job but I've access to some very experienced welders at my work and they could do it if they know which kind of allow it's made of.

The AZ91 sounds familiar: Magnesium Casting Alloys

der Lubemeister has admitted that he has access to a mass spec., so if anyone _really_ wants to know...
