Convertible Hydraulic Fluid type?

I need to service the convertible top hydraulic fluid in my 2001 996. Can I use regular hydraulic fluid, or does it have to be the $40 "Porsche" Hydraulic fluid?

Thanks for the replies...

Also, I know that the hydraulic reservoir is behind the rear seat under the carpet. How do you service it? There is no cap or anything. It looks like there is a clamp around the bottom of the pump and fluid is in a small cup that is attached to the pump???

take a look at this. I'm currently working on an article on how to service the pump for our 101 projects for your 996 book.

I'd reccomened using Pentosin CHF-11S for the fluid.

82-11-0-148-132-M210 is the part number

Great write up, thanks

So I just found out that you are not required to use the "Porsche" brand fluid, but a suitable substitute is:

CHF 11S or CHF 202 by Pentosin. It should be available at your local auto parts store.

This is the same stuff that is in the Porsche power steering pump if you have to top that off.

Can anyone confirm or provide a source that confirms CFH 202 can be used safely in place of CHF 11S?

My burning question is if they are interchangeble, why would Pentosin make both types of this fluid?

Thanks in advance.
