What engine do i have?
 

Ok, I am very new to Porsche's, Ive had mine less than a year, but even worse im new to cars. Its my first car and i'm very young and inexperienced so please bear with me as I will have many "simple" questions coming to this thread.

I restored my fathers 78 sc converted turbo look. The engine and transmission were ruined so my mechanic found a 3.2 engine and 915 transmission which he thinks is '86 and from germany (231 hp version). But he was never positive. How can I verify this without taking it out? Would the number on the fan housing give me enough info? How much power do I lose if the muffler etc. is still sc? And I read sc is 200 pounds lighter, is this correct?

The SC is a lighter car than the Carrera, you are correct there. If you have SSI headers on the SC then I would venture to say they will actually flow better than the header system that was originally on the 3.2 motor.

The factory lists SCs at 1160 kg....or about 2550 lbs....but the way they were optioned for US, the weight difference is negligable against the official US weight of 3.2 Carreras of 2760 lbs. I would be surprised if an apples-to-apples comparison shows more than 50-100 lbs difference.

Look for rhe serial number on the vertical right side of the fan housing support...and look also for the engine "type" number ( like 930/21) faintly impressed on the engine topside in that same general area , a bit back and hidden.
