Just make sure you pay attention to the label. Apparently the VR1 has many forms. From what I read, you want the "non-street legal" racing version that says it right on the label. There could be a version that is "current car" catalytic suitable with of course won't be the good stuff for old cars. Hope this isn't just old news to everyone else. I need another case of break-in oil this week so I'm keeping my eyes open. Have a fill of Brad 30 weight break in oil in the car now and want to do one more fill of non-synthetic before going back to my regular Brad 20-50.

be sure to sign up for their rewards club first, and then make your purchases just over $20 each (before tax). for every 5 purchases of $20 or more you get a $20 instant reward (read: credit). i got a few cases free because of that last summer.

Can anybody confirm this? I contacted my local Auto Zone to confirm, and they are selling @ $5.49 / qt. Where is this info coming from?

This is not correct. If it says "VR1 racing" in Red Letters it is acceptable. There are non-VR1 oils in a similar bottle. Just look for the "VR1 racing" in red. The VR1 tested and found to be good does not have the "not-street legal designation".

Valvoline/1 qt. SAE 20W-50 VR1 Racing oil (VALRAC20W50) | Engine Oil | AutoZone.com

From Valvoline Website --

"Which oil has more zinc/ZDDP: VR1 or "Not Street Legal" oil?

Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil contains .13% of Zinc and .12% of Phosphorus compared to the Valvoline "Not Street Legal" Racing Oil which contains .14% of Zinc and .13% of Phosphorus."

It is in their national ad. Here is a link to the PDF. Print and take it into the store?

Here's the download of the flyer. I bought 2 cases last night.
Perhaps it's not at all stores.

Just a quick question, does the VR-1 leak out as fast as the Brad Penn? Put that in a 2.2 and leaked like crazy, went back to Castrol 20-50, no leaks (change the oil once a year, <1000 miles between oil changes. Thanks for any information. Steve

Never had that issue. . Id think that the detergent levels or difference in base stocks could cause differences with old weeping gaskets. On a fresh rebuild, I doubt you would see these differences. People seem to have different experiences with different oils.

There are two kinds of VR1 Racing -- Dino and Synthetic. Perhaps you had the Syn? There is also a Dino VR1 Racing that is not street legal. The content of the good stuff was almost the same in the street legal and non-street legal versions. About 100 ppm difference.

Adding to the confusion is that there was a non VR1 Racing 20w50 that was in a similar colored bottle. Not sure if that has been corrected. I always just look for the bright red letters....

That's what I was going to say. When you look on the circular it says "not avaiable in all stores"

Kinda stupid to have a sale that doesn't apply to all stores in the chain. But now that I think about it, one could argue the ad implies the oil itself is not available in all stores. It does NOT mean the sale is not available in all stores.

"...one could argue the ad implies the oil itself is not available in all stores." Bingo.
Is their dino oil 10W40?

They dont make VR1 in 10w40.

They make VR1 in the following weights --

20w50, straight 50, 10w30, straight 30, straight 40, and straight 60

Great buy...did so myself last year....Though I run the 20w50 in my 911, do all the other grades carry the same additive package?

Wondering, as I'm doing a full rebuild on another engine with solid tappets but 20/50 is a bit thick.
