Too Many Tan Interiors! I'm gunna hurl.
Answer me this, why do so many otherwise beautiful 911's have 'smokers tan' like hideously colored interiors? I'm gunna hurl. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/suppo...leys/pukey.gif
I guess reaching the point in life where you can afford a Porsche also triggers the point at which you wear tan pants with tan velcro tennies while you sit in your tan cord bacholounger smoking a stoggie. Or is it because the children of the 70's (the tan/gold/orange/olive-green era) also bought 911's in the 80's? - My main question - can an 80's leather 911 interior be successfuly dyed black? Anyone tried this? My guess would be, at best you can minus the seats, which will surely show wear thru the black dye (and end up on your white 80's Miami Vice slacks) within a year? No? So, maybe all but the front seats? I'm so tired of looking at nice clean 80's 911's with tan interiors. Especially red ones. I need an inexpesive fix so I can buy one of these. Even Ferrari will suffer this legacy for centuries. Red+Tan? Where else is this appropriate? Please, Black!!! God, what were new 911 buyers thinking? That one version of tacky Porsche olive/orange tan is just the most horrible color in a car since Corinthian Leather in a Cordoba. Thanx! :D |
rather than dyeing it just replace it if you don't like ...
looked in your garage and didn't see a 911 ... so I am assuming you are looking ... best recommendation to you would be buy one with a black or other interior that you like ..... they don't all have tan ... Steve |
dnftt.

I really prefer the tan and black interior, sorry. All black looks like a dark cave to me.
Cheers Richard |
Lighten up, Francis.

some people have dyed their seats with good results, but then there is still the rest of the interior to worry about. though tan doesnt appeal to me either, its not that bad. if the car was otherwise exactly what i was looking for i would try to live with it
|
just go buy a rattlecan of paint and start spraying!:D
Seriously, interiors are easy to swap out (with the exception of the dash). . . . I wouldn't get your tan trousers in a snit. |
Dying leather
Find a Summit Racing store or order online. They sell a black spray on upholstery dye that will work on both leather and vinyl. Once it drys, it won't rub off. Leaves a nice semi gloss "leather" look. I just used some on the rear side panels, rear window sills, the door sills (top of door panels) and the knee pads under the dash. All of the pieces turned out great. In this picture, you can see the passenger side door upper sill and some of the passenger side rear panel. Both were light tan leather to begin with.

You must be in the minority because tan is a pretty popular interior color. Many of the cars were ordered that way by the dealer beacause that's what the majority of buyers wanted. Same reason you see so many Ferrari tan interiors.
Lighten up Francis. |
If you live in Florida - where black can reach temps of the surface of the sun - "tan" can be pretty desirable - especially with the lackluster AC that these cars are known for.
But - I personally could not stand RED Porsche's - talk about the ultimate cliché... When I started looking for a replacement for the cab - all I found was Guards Red Porsches! |
There ARE cars with black interiors out there.....I have one. If you are set on a black interior however you're definitely narrowing your choices. Ya think tan is bad.....take a look a the plaid 70's, definitely a period piece. Good luck

If I had a red car, the ONLY color I would consider for the interior is tan. I absolutely hate red/black. Red/tan is very attractive.

to the OP....whatever, so go hurl already |
The OP has a valid point.....
I am helping a certain German gentleman find good US-sourced Porsches....and he says don't find tan interiors as they are not looked upon postively in the German used Porsche market. Of course....what does one find here?..... Guards red cars with tan interiors....black cars with tan interiors,...etc, etc.... I must admit, as the tan ages and shows leather wrinkles and slight darkening and such, it also begins to look a bit more wore-torn than a dark navy blue or black interior would. |
The light tan (Parchment) interiors of the era are quite attractive but I believe that the O/P is talking about the distinctly orange-tan interiors that were pretty common from the SCs to the Carreras. I personally can't stand the orangy interiors either but would never dye one black to cover it up.
Find and buy a car that you actually like... there are lots of 911s out there for the taking. |
If you like black, get black. If you like tan, get tan. It's your business what you like, but don't deride what others prefer. I would love an orange interior, if I could get it.

Yes, the black dye will surely show wear thru (and end up on your white 80's Miami Vice slacks) within a year. And will flake off the sun-visors, and in to your (Just for Men) dyed chest hair.
But just think of the Bliss of having a dark, Darth Vader-cool (except in the sun) interior! To make the black stay longer, drive naked. The Just for Men that you use on body-hair sweater will combine with the black dye of the seats. ...Don't let the gold chains rub thru... have your BF braid your neck-hair around the clasp. I should note, that the above directions came from a Corvette forum. Hope that helps  |
I don't really agree with the whole "tan is an old guy's color" thing but then again, I'm not real keen on retina scathing orange rolling boxes (Hot lava Xb? ;)). Gold? Right...
The real kick comes when you strap on a 911 and drive it. The color of the seats becomes immaterial. Changes to interiors here are very well documented and, with a little searching, you can find everything from seat dying to complete interior replacement. |
seriously, the a/c in the early 911s sucks and having a black interior will make it even less effective. if you don't have a/c (I don't), black would be unbearable in the summer. No way I could drive my car in summer with a black interior. I would only get black interior in a more modern car whose a/c actually works well.
