How many miles untill rebuild?
I was reading a recent post about when most owners opened up the motor to rebuild it, or at least a portion of it. So I thought a poll was in order.

135k and nothing but oil changes plugs etc. Runs like a top |
135,000 before rebuild but it ran fine just leaked and consumed a little oil. Runs awesome now and should be good for a long time with brass bushes etc.

A bit over 300,000 miles here, and nearing rebuild time I think.
|
I'm at 95k with nothing major. I'm beginning to see some signs of needing a rebuild in the future.

Pulled the 2.4 just shy of 160k km, so around 100k miles. It was running ok, but smoking, and a bit tired. Of course, it's possible there's another 100k km on there, as it's only a 5-digit odometer, but who knows.
I just bought a 154k mile 3.0L to put in there that had excellent compression and leakdown #s, for that mileage. Should go another 100k before requiring a rebuild. |
113K stll runs great and no leaks

Dead cylinder at 120k. Turned out to be suffering from a lot of shady wrenching, chain ramp floating around inside of the case, wrong oil used and badly pitted cams. Failed safety collar rattling around in block, bearings down to the copper, RTV all over everything.
So if you figure mine was one of the bigger train wrecks on a 3.0l it did very well all things considered. But it needed a ton of new stuff, p&c's, a cam tower, new cams and rockers. I don't think we reused anything besides the case and the crank. |
All of the 911s I have owned have had at least top end jobs. None have had under 100,000 on the odometer.
I like to warm them up, but I am not afraid to use them. I wouldn't be very happy driving a car for 300,000 miles if I couldn't drive it. In fact, I have sold a few garage queens because I wouldn't drive them. |
Top end rebuilds count, correct....? Yes, top end gone at approx. 68K miles on my 87. Although it really pi**ed me off at the time, I'm over it now b/c my good friend did an excellent job. She runs great and burns/leaks no oil now. It ticked me off so much I bought a 993! Well over 100k on her w/no rebuilds yet... but if it happens, I will be much less pi**ed b/c of the miles on her.

Got to 260000 km (about 160000 m) before it broke a valve spring. While I had it open, I couldn't see any sign of any earlier work by the previous owner(s). Still going strong after that minor hiccup.

Mine was at 148,000 miles, which I guess close enough to 150k. It required a complete - and I do mean complete - top-end rebuild only, including studs, thank you very much. The guys at TRE checked the bottom end and found the bearings like new. So that was left alone. But man, it sure runs good now.
Oh, and for what it's worth, there was lots of pitting on rocker-arm faces and cam lobes that had to be repaired. A pox on newer oils! |
