Distributor question
 

I have a 1970 911 T. the engine number is consistent for that year. The car is running very rough. The distributor is a Bosch 0 231 169 001, which according to our host is out of a 1968 T. Is there a compatibility issue ?

Have you checked timing and seen it to be incorrect? If not, do this first. Then check points for proper gap. Carburetors? Are they out of adjustment? Plugs? Wires? Check everything else before you blame the distributor.

Actually, that part number is wrong. The correct dizzy for a '70T is a 231 159 008.

However, the 001 shouldn't be too bad. There are a lot of other factors that can have an affect on the motor and make it run rough.

Can you please post:

-When did the rough running begin, what were the circumstances?
-engine #
-What are you using for induction?
-What work have you done receintly?
-Is the vacuum system to the distributor hooked up?
-If so, then what is it hooked to?
-Have you checked or changed your points?
-How old are your plug wires?

This should give us enough info to start tackling the problem methodically.

I have the same engine with similar problems.
To the best of my knowkedge the 1970 T never had vacuum advance.
I purchased a bosch to replace my marelli.
I know very little about Porsche engines as i am new to them.
MY dizzy # is 0231 184 001 with a vacuum advance that i ran a line to off of my Zenith carbs.I just ordered a set of PMO carbs and come to find out that this distributor is from a later model 2.4 or 2.7 L.
I think the guy in cali that i got it from machined it to fit my case.
It's all very confusing to me.

I was not trying to cause confusion!

The part number listed by the OP is actually a 2.4/2.7 distributor. These are sometimes machined down to make them work with the old 2.2 cases.

The later distributors do have a vacuum system. None from the 2.2 or earlier era had vacuum.

I only asked about vacuum because of the late car part #. On a stock '70T there shouldn't be any vacuum at all.

check the mechanical advance with a timing light.
verify timing at idle and 6K. (i dont go to 6K)
