1980 911 porsche question

I am trying to figure out something here. I am looking at this porsche and can't make what I am looking for. owner states it is a 80 porsche but the vin comes right back to a 76. I am quite sure it looks like sc style. as I have had some discussion about the car with a member here. but I asked the owner about the vin. and he told me there was a discrepency back when he got the car. and the state inspector came out and they had to title it as a 76 based on the vin. I don't know. also I looked at it. and drove it. it was great. but Idid not see any numbers on the engine. the point I am trying to establish is this. I want to make sure it is the 3.0 engine. which I was told was better and newer then the 2.7 for a multitude of reasons explained to me on this here site. I will put some pics of this car and could I please get a yes it is the latter (80) car. the title dont mean crap. it does match the serial number and that would make it easy to get it titled in my state. sorry for rambling guys.. I appreciate all this info and the ino you gave me on the 75 porsche that has been sitting for 15ish years..

get the type and serial number from the engine and post that. the engine type should be 930/?? for a SC. hit the "search" feature and look for where to find the numbers (to the lower right of the fan).

where in montana are you? my wife and i have a house in missoula.

this is a car I am looking at. the owner can not find any numbers on the engine. that is the problem. I just don't want to buy the car if this is a 2.7 I did tell him where the numbers were at. does the car look to be an sc? wider fender flares? etc

80's

It sure looks like an SC to me. That speedo was not installed until 1980 and used for two years after that if I recall.

Good luck!

does the owner know where to look for the engine numbers?

perhaps send him the instructions as to where to look

but from the pics it looks 1980-ish

any idea where in Montana?

the month and year of production should be on a plate on the driver's door jamb. that certainly looks like an SC. The SC also had the 11 blade fan as shown (but that is a common upgrade to the earlier 5 blade fans). I think the engine type is also stamped in large numbers on the bottom of engine, near the oil drain plug and seam where the halves meet.

That's a 3.0 liter engine. You can tell by the distributor and CDI box. The car certainly looks like an 80-83 SC to me. I think the 85 mph speedo started in 80-81

If you post the vin # that's stamped in the chassis by the gas tank we can tell you what it is

Everything on the car, the fan, the shroud, the CDI box, the speedometer, the fender flares, etc., says 1980 911 SC. They standardized VINs in 1981, so a 1980 may cause some squirreling in some states when it is registered. My husband's 1980 european 911 caused me quite a whoop-de-doo at the DMV when I first registered it.

Provide the VIN and we'll run it for you but there is NOTHING here that looks like an earlier car.

Oh, and loose the turbo insignia if you buy it...

loose the turbo insignia? isn't it a turbo? just kidding...
yes there was some question on the vin and the year. I love this car. it drives great and I am probably going to purchase it. I just did not want it to be a earllier car. like I said earlier. the dmv had problems with 3 cars that we know of in montana. and all were 1980 porsches.
don't know why. I do really appreciate all your responses on this. and I do believe it is an 80 now. thanks very much

I had a 1980 and that looks very much like it. By the way it looks as if the car has factory sport seats, very valuable - don't tell the seller!

I've seen that car advertised on CL for several iterations now. One ad briefly noted that the original color was blue. Made me wonder why someone would paint a blue 911 gold? Now I hear of VIN discrepancies, and that makes me wonder....

I wondered the same thing. I have the vin. I should get the vin ran just to see if it is hot or not I seen the title. and the title does indeed match vin on the pillar in the drivers side windshield area. the owner has known where the car was since it was new. I should check. I do not want a hot car. the owner said that he bought it from the original owner. the original owner did not like the color and had it painted this color. and had the turbo insignia put on there as well I really doubt it was stolen

There is a blue timing retard hose on the distributor. Is that pre-1980?

The US 1980 had an O2 sensor. First year. That would be a sure sign the engine is not pre-1980.

Only thing that looks slightly odd is the window moldings on the side windows. They look non-black. The 80 SC had black anodized trim. Front and rear look ok.

Looks like some of it is wearing off the front. May not be an issue. The rear SC emblem always turns silver over time and it was originally black.

if you buy the car as titled a 76... then you send off to Porsche a copy of your title, they can document that it is an 80 or whatever . Then you can go back to your title office and get the thing re-titled as the correct year.
I did this with an 81 I bought, the title said 80, as it was a grey a market car, and the year made a difference back then as to being able to bring it in.
So I gained a newer car on title when I did what I mentioned above. Porsche was great about it.

That is being responsible. No argument. (RE - VIN posting)

However, one of these smarter guys could get a PM and PM you back what they find.

I'm not thinking that it may be hot, but that it may be reconstructed from 2 different cars - a '76 and an '80. That could explain a lot...
