Power Window Motors
 

I'm restoring my 74 Carrera and the power window motors are shot. OEM replacement motors run $375 a piece. At this price are they even worth it? Have the new OEM motors been improved over time? If so will units from later model 911's fit? Are there other alternatives I should consider? Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated

Steve I have a 75 S which had a similar problem. I removed the motors, put a vice grip on them and a little WD40, hooked them up to a battery charger and they have run ever since. Its seems the shaft got a little rusty from rain, once I broke them loose I have never had a problem. Good luck.Mark D

can be repaired. They may only need brushes or bearings. If the armature is shot, you can carefully unwind it, measure the length of wire on each section and note how it is wound and connected to the commutator. A visit to a motor shop will get you the correct gauge magnet wire to re-wind the armature with. Remember that these motors don't turn very fast so balance is not critical. I once had an electric top motor burn out on my Corvair convertible. I did not want to fork over the $350 or so for a new one so I repaired the old. That was about 1990 and it is still working to this day. The cost to fix my old top motor was $0 as the motor shop manager gave me the wire!
