Proper 1972 911T Exterior Appearance?

I picked up a 1972 911T this past summer and am in the process of restoring it back to original condition and appearance. I am now the 4th owner of the car.

I believe that one of the previous owners did a "blackout" treatment to some exterior parts, notably the wheels, rear grill, wheels, front grills, windshield wipers, and front grills. However, I'm a bit confused as I have seen similar 1972's with some black exterior parts. What confuses me even more is that all four turn signal lens bezels have a black surround, not a chrome one.

It is possible that these blacked-out parts were original with car? How do I determine which parts should be chrome and/or aluminum and which ones were actually black?

Thanks in advance.

- Sherm

first of all welcome ,
nice car ...you are right in your conclusions. there are a few changes i see as well and they are easy to convert if you want. i think all the black trim started in 73
1.headlight ring chrome not body color
2.i beleive horn bezels should be chrome..black came out in 73 3.
3. same with the turn signal and brake light lenses
4. 15 inch wheels were standard , your wheels look like 16's.
5. grill not painted
imho would say no big deal, others will chime in.
regards, ben

In 72' turn signal lense surround was chrome. Horn grills were also chrome. The letters and decklid grill were black anodize. It appears you have the correct letters but the anodize has faded. Your decklid grill has been painted over. I actually like the look of faded black anodizing but that's just me. I restored my car and left the lettering and grill faded. Personal choice, patina if you will.

The wheels you have are incorrect for 72'. You should have 15x6" wheels anodized clear with black background. Also headlight rings should be chrome in the style you have for USA or chrome H4's for rest of world.
